Survival of bacteria in four different transportation systems.

The survival of various bacteria in pure cultures and in mixed suspensions in two Stuart (SBL and Bifok) and one Amies (Securline) transportation systems were compared with the conventional agar slope. Considerable differences were found. Stuart Bifok and Stuart SBL were superior to the other two.

The penetration of trimethoprim into seminal fluid and serum.

A series of determinations of the concentrations of trimethoprim in seminal fluid and serum was made during the treatment of 18 men. Trimethoprim could be demonstrated in an average concentration in serum of 1.8-2.0 mug per millilitre and in seminal fluid of between 1.0 and 1.5 mug per millilitre. At the same time it was demonstrated that the combination of trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole (co-trimoxazole) has no effect on genital mycoplasma species.

Penicillin combinations against multi-resistant urinary pathogens as an alternative to gentamycin treatment.

A total of 42 multi-resistant urinary pathogens, sensitive to gentamycin only, were investigated with regard to the effects of dicloxacillin and ampicillin or cloxacillin/flucloxacillin and amoxycillin in combination. A synergistic antibiotic effect with resulting low MIC levels was demonstrated for 81% of the strains. It was also found that a further increase in sensitivity might be achieved by adjustment of the pH level.

Doxycycline concentration levels in bone, soft tissue and serum after intravenous infusion of doxycycline. A clinical study.

As part of a longitudinal study, the influence of preoperative single dose doxycycline treatment on the overall incidence of early postoperative wound infections in orthopaedic surgery, 34 patients with various fractures were given an intravenous infusion of doxycycline 2-4 hours before the operation. The serum concentrations of doxycycline were determined on specimens taken during the operation and on 4 other occasions, the last being 48 hours after operation. All patients except 4 had serum concentration levels of 0.4 mug per ml or above at 48 hours. During the operation, specimens of skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle and bone were also taken. The doxycycline concentrations were determined in the various tissues and correlated to the concomitant serum concentration. The results were analysed with regard to the possible influence of preoperative single dose doxycycline treatment for prevention of early postoperative infections.

Possible inhibition of N. gonnorrhoeae by C. albicans. A clinical study.

A probably sifnificant difference (p smaller that 0.05) in the occurrence of gonorrhoea was found between women with and without concomitant C. albicans infection. Although this difference could support the recently reported inhibitory effect by C. albicans on N. gonorrhoeae in vitro another explanation might be the possibility that too many women with vaginal candidiasis and no risk for a gonococcal infection were included in the material. There was nothing to support the in vivo effect of C. albicans on N. gonorrhoeae as negative gonococcal cultures in women known to have been exposed to N. gonorrhoeae could not be correlated with the presence of C. albicans. Until the clinical importance of the inhibitory factor of C. albicans has been studied further, the clinician has to be aware of the possibility of false negative gonococcal cultures from women with vaginal candidiasis.
