To assess the postnatal development of the GABA system in the rat spinal cord, GABA levels and GAD activity, as well as specific [3H]-muscimol binding, were determined in the dorsal and ventral areas. GABA levels and GAD activities did not vary in parallel from 1 to 8 postnatal days since the former decreased and the latter increased. After 8 days, however, increases in GABA levels and GAD activities were observed in tissues from the dorsal area and decreases were observed in tissues from the ventral area. Specific [3H]muscimol binding was unexpectedly high in both areas at 1 and 8 days but decreased linearly up to 22 days. Our findings show that there are distinct differences in the development of the GABA system in the rat spinal cord and brain.
Spinal reflex and neuromuscular functions were investigated in the beagles ingesting clioquinol over a long period. The twitch tension, the refractory period, the summation of contraction and the discharge of the muscle spindles of the gastrocnemius muscle were not significantly damaged in the treated beagles, whereas the response with long latency of the spinal reflex disappeared completely during the administration not in the control but in the treated dogs. The meanings of disappearance of the spinal reflex in the treated dogs are discussed in relation to the degenerative change in the fasciculus gracilis at the cervical level of the spinal cord.
Visual system was examined in 3 beagles given clioquinol for a long period and in 2 control beagles. Ophthalmoscopic examination revealed the decreased diameter of the optic disks of the treated dogs except for one dog. There were degenerative changes of the optic nerves in all of the treated dogs. The changes included disruption of the axons and the myelin sheaths. It was difficult to observe the morphological change of the retinae of the treated dogs. The findings demonstrate that the changes in the visual system after clioquinol administration are severe in the optic nerves rather than in the retinae.

The effects of aging on enzyme qualities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme and acetyl-CoA carboxylase were investigated. The Ouchterlony double-diffusion pattern showed that the enzymes from livers of rats of different ages are immunologically similar to each other. In addition, immunochemical titration demonstrated that the changes in the levels of activity of rats of different age are accompanied by proportionate changes in the quantity of the enzyme protein. The Kms of the enzymes for substrates were not altered by aging. It is suggested that the age-dependent impairments of the enzyme induction (Iritani, N., Fukuda, H., and Fukuda, E. (1981) Biochim. Biophys. Acta, 665, 639) can be ascribed to decreases in the rise of enzyme protein quantities.

We have examined the basic studies on the rotational performance of the air turbine handpieces by using the brake method. Once, we used the constant feed speed testing method in which the test bur was pressed to the brake block at a constant feed speed. In the case of this method, the load increases in inverse proportion to the rotational speed as the loading time increases. In this paper for analyzing on the problem of the brake block materials used to this testing method, we did the performance test of the usually used air turbine handpieces by using the glass and the supper alloy which were superior to the frictional resistance as the brake materials. Consequently, by the difference of these brake materials, the characteristics of handpieces are not influences. But, in the long loading times, the dynamic friction coefficient between the glass block and the test bur became the great values. Therefore, in the constant feed speed testing method, the measured values of normal loads on the test bur, are influenced with the dynamic friction coefficients in the high load levels. On the rapidly dropped phenomenon of the rotational speed of air turbine handpieces, we measured the moment values at the support of test bur. And then we discussed the relation between the rotational performance and the length of burs or points using for cutting instruments. On the basis of the theoretical and experimental investigations of air turbine's rotational performance, we measured and examined the maximum works of the various kinds of the handpieces used in clinical field. The characteristics of the four-type handpieces, such the standard, torque and miniature types and air bearing type, used in this studies, were influenced with the materials of the brake block as far as the bounds of the loads were high in the rotational performance tests.

In the present study, we used netilmicin for the postoperative complications and obtained the following results. 1. Netilmicin was used in totally 29 cases; 23 with localized peritonitis, 4 with generalized peritonetis and 2 with wound infection. Excellent effects were obtained in 2 cases, effective results in 24 cases and ineffective results in 3 cases. The effective rate was 89.7%. 2. Adverse reactions or abnormal clinical laboratory test results which might be attributable to the use of netilmicin were not noticed.
Using vibrotactile stimuli, equal-sensation contours and a threshold curve were determined on the glabrous skin of the human hand. Equal-sensation contours were measured between 1 Hz and 16 Hz. When plotted on log-log coordinates, they monotonically decreased as a function of frequency and were downward by concaved. The threshold curve was measured between 1 Hz and 50 Hz. Its values decreased linearly from 1 Hz to 16 Hz, became constant at 16-35 Hz, and decreased again at 35-50 Hz. Therefore, at the stimulus range of 1-16 Hz, equal-sensation contours were downward concave and the threshold curve was more or less linear. This discrepancy seems to be caused by the differences in mechanoreceptor types which take part in subjective responses: suprathreshold sensation depends on several types of mechanoreceptors, whereas vibrotactile thresholds depends mainly on RA receptors (Meissner corpuscles).
