Relations between the HLA-antigens and immune responsiveness to SK/SD in healthy Japanese subjects.

A possible association between the HLA antigens and immune responsiveness to SK/SD was studied in 90 healthy Japanese volunteers. No association was found between the HLA antigens, including B5, and SK/SD stimulated blastoid transformation. There was a week indication of an association between Bw22 and responses to SK/SD. But this was not statistically significant as far as the corrected P value was concerned.

The effect of beta adrenergic receptor blockade on the renin response to respiratory acidosis.

The effect of beta adrenergic blockade on the increase in plasma renin activity produced by acute respiratory acidosis was studied in chloralose anesthetized dogs. Sixteen mongrel dogs were given 4%, 8% and 12% CO2 in room air, successively. Propranolol (2 mg/Kg) was given to 8 dogs prior to CO2 inhalation. The other 8 dogs served as the control group. The response of elevated plasma renin activity during 4% and 8% CO2 inhalation was not different between the control and propranolol groups. However, the increase of plasma renin activity in the control group was greater than that of the propranolol treated group during 12% CO2 inhalation. It is suggested that activation of beta adrenergic receptors is not the sole factor in renin control during acute respiratory acidosis, although these receptors do mediate a significant fraction of the renin response to CO2 inhalation.

Fine structure of the spleen in autoimmune hemolytic anemia associated with systemic lupus erythematosus.

The fine structures of the red pulp of the spleen and the liver of a patient with autoimmune hemolytic anemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia associated with systemic lupus erythematosus are described. The red blood cells were phagocytized in toto by the splenic macrophages. These also contained neutrophils and platelets in various stages of degradation. Sinus endothelial cells revealed occasional erythrophagocytosis. The Kupffer cells in the liver occasionally contained red cells and platelets. These morphological findings and marked improvement of hematological abnormalities following splenectomy suggested that the spleen was the major site of destruction of blood cells. Undulating tubules associated with the endoplasmic reticulum were present in the sinus endothelial cells of the spleen.

[Intracranial pressure in patients with diffuse cerebral arterial spasm following ruptured intracranial aneurysms (author's transl)].

Intracranial pressure (ICP) was recorded continuously for 2 to days in 12 pre-operative patients with angiographic evidence of diffuse cerebral arterial spasm due to ruptured intracranial aneurysm. The ICP pattern of the low level (below 15 mmHg) and flat type was registered in the early stage of the arterial spasm in 11 patients in whom the ICP recording was made within 11 days after the hemorrhagic attack. During the period of low and flat ICP pattern, 6 patients showed little or no neurological deterioration whereas 5 patient showed impaired consciousness or neurological deficits. In 9 out 11 patients, the low level of ICP was followed by an abnormal deterioration. Continuous ventricular drainage was performed to control the secondary increased ICP in 7 patients and they survived, 4 of them with good results but remaining 3 with severe neurological deficits.

Three glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase variants found in Japan.

Three Japanese glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) variants were investigated. G6PD 'Mediterranean-like' had markedly decreased activity, normal electrophoretic mobility, low Km G6P, low Km NADP, increased utilization of all three substrate analogues (2-deoxy-G6P, Gal-6P, and deamino-NADP) and slightly decreased heat stability and slightly biphasic pH curve. G6PD 'Ogori' had markedly decreased activity, but otherwise normal characteristics. G6PD 'Hofu' had moderately decreased activity, normal electrophoretic mobility, slightly reduced Km G6P, normal Km NADP, normal utilization of 2-deoxy-G6P and Gal-6P, but increased utilization of deamino-NADP and normal heat stability as well as normal pH curve.

Systemic lupus erythematosus in a boy with a review of the Japanese literature.

A 3-year-old boy with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with no skin rash whatever throughout the course of the disease is described, and the possibility of occurrence without skin rash is stressed. Seventeen cases of SLE in male children were collected from the Japanese literature and reviewed. Death occurred in 4 patients. Not only renal but also pancreatic involvement was found to be of significance in causing death in childhood SLE.

Short-term changes in the perception of comfortable mandibular occlusal positions.

In search of a new clinical method for determining the occlusal height of full dentures, the perception of the comfortable zone was studied in fifteen edentulous patients. In each experimental session perceptual changes were recorded from forty-four consecutive applications of a screw jack per subject. Two stages in perceptual acuity were found. An initial stage, in which only minor variations occurred among the final screw adjustments which the subjects made when they assessed the borders of the comfortable zone. In the ensuing stage greater variations emerged, indicating a deterioration in the ability of the subjects to discriminate.

A new intra-oral screw jack.

A new pattern of screwjack for assessing the vertical dimension for occlusion utilizing an edentulous patient's proprioceptive sensation is described. It provides a greater range of movement than other, giving infinitely variable heights between 9 and 21 mm. The elements being captive, it cannot come to pieces in use. Laboratory experiments were contrived to define the magnitude of reading errors and the play in the screw threads. It was found that, only in instances where a graduation related closely to the datum mark, did errors of interpretation arise. These were found to exceed the height set for test purposes by 0-1 mm consistently. An error of this order is of no practical significance clinically and is no impediment to such an application of the device. Mean play in the new pattern jacks was 0-01 mm compared to 0-05 mm in the Timmer versions. In a clinical experiment the performance of the screw was compared to that of Timmer. Statistical evidence was found which suggested a functional difference between the two, the new pattern being significantly more accurate.

A comparative study of three different approaches to the comfortable zone.

By means of a screw jack device, applied to thirteen edentulous subjects, the comfortable zone was approached in three different ways, by the central, the internal and the external approaches. Correspondingly, the zonal borders behaved differently. Applying the central approach it was found that the initial height of the screw jack had a lingering effect upon subsequent adjustments of the screw. Moreover, lower border data collected by the external approach distinguished themselves from other zonal border data by showing a significantly lower susceptibility to successive adjustments. The study suggests that muscle activity is a factor on which the perceptual mechanism relies, when a zonal border is assessed subjectively by a patient.

Evoked EMG of masseter and temporal muscles in man.

Following a percutaneous stimulation on the mandibular notch skin, two kinds of responses were recorded in the ipsilateral masseter and temporal muscles in man. The two responses had their proper stimulating points. The early response appeared with about a 2 ms latency and the late one with about a 6 ms latency which was shorter than that of T wave of the same muscle by about 1 ms. No responses were induced in the contralateral masseter and temporal muscles. Regarding the recovery process of the late response following double stimuli, a testing late response was released about 100% from the effect of conditioning shock at a longer interval than 80 approximately 95 ms. It might be safe to consider that the previous assumption, i.e. those two responses seemed to be M and H waves respectively, had been fortified. H response evoked in muscles tested seems to be sensitive enough to show the difference between excitatory states of its reflex arc.
