The 1976-1977 rubella epidemic in Fukuoka city in southern Japan: epidemiology and incidences of complications among 80,000 persons who were school children at 28 primary schools and their family members.

From 1975 to 1977, a nationwide rubella epidemic occurred in Japan. This epidemic provided the last chance for the observation of natural rubella and its epidemiology without the influence of mass-vaccination for rubella and before changes in the epidemic pattern of rubella in the 1980's in Japan. Epidemiological and clinical data were obtained by questionnaires on school children in 28 selected primary schools and their family members (a total of 80,221 persons) in Fukuoka in southern Japan during the 1976-1977 rubella epidemic. At the end of 1975 the rubella epidemic was mainly in the western part of Fukuoka city and then it spread to the eastern part. After a break during the summer of 1976, the epidemic restarted in 1977 mainly in the eastern part with few cases in the western part. Rubella was identified clinically in 14,322 cases (18%) during the 1976 epidemic, the incidences in various age groups being as follows: children of below 6 years of age, 28%; primary school children, 37%; junior and senior high school students, 30%; adults of 18 to 30 years of age, 8%; adults of over 30 years of age, 1%. The incidence in primary school children in 1977 was 18%. Of the 14,322 cases of clinical rubella in 1976, 3 with encephalitis, 9 with purpura and 1,843 with joint complaints (pain and/or swelling of joints) were recorded. Rubella encephalitis was estimated to have occurred in 1 in 4,700 cases with clinical rubella, and purpura in 1 in 1,500 cases.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Autoradiographic study on localization of progestin target cells in the chicken testes.

Using an autoradiographic technique, the localization and concentration of progestin (P) in cell constituents of testes from the immature 25-to-70-day-old and mature 120-day-old chickens were investigated. After incubation of the frozen tissue sections with 3H-Promegestone (R5020), a synthetic P, specific radioactivity, was found in the seminiferous epithelium and interstitium in all the animals in the presence or in the absence of various non-radioactive steroids, and the intensity of radioactivity differed with age: high in 25-, 70-and 120-day-old chickens, and low in 50-day-old chickens. Estrogen treatment enhanced the intensity of radioactivity in the cells at all ages. The concentration of radioactivity was higher in the seminiferous epithelium than in the interstitial cells. In the frozen tissue sections, it was not possible to identify the kind of cell taking up the high amount of radioactivity. These results indicate that the testes from chicken during their growing stages contain cell constituents that specifically bind P.

[Clinical evaluation of cefmetazole for the prevention of postoperative wound infections].

The authors treated 415 patients, with injection of 4 g cefmetazole (CMZ) per day after operation of the digestive tract. In these cases, the prevention of postoperative wound infections was investigated and the following results were obtained. Out of 415 cases, 11 cases (2.7%) had postoperative wound infections; 6 cases of which were superficial wound infections and 5 cases deep wound infections. In relation to the degree of infection of the surgical field of them, 10 cases were performed with the contamination by bowel organisms and 1 case was in infected surgical field. Bacteriological examination was carried out. Twenty-four strains of bacteria were isolated and identified. The major bacterial strains identified were 6 strains of S. faecalis, 4 strains of E. cloacae and 4 strains of P. aeruginosa. These organisms were rarely sensitive to CMZ. The results suggest that the organisms causing postoperative wound infections are changing compared with the organisms of previous reports and that the use of CMZ as a postoperative medication is useful in the prevention of wound infections.

[Two cases of Buschke-Löwenstein tumor].

We report two cases of Buschke-Löwenstein Tumor on 39- and 55-year-old males. Both patients presented with mass and pain of glans penis. Pathological diagnosis of biopsy specimens were condyloma acuminatum in both cases. Bleomycin was not effective. Therefore, tumor resection in the first case and partial penectomy on second case were performed. Pathological examination revealed hyperkeratosis, acanthosis and downward growth of the prickle cell layer. But cellular atypia were not seen. Pathological diagnosis was Buschke-Löwenstein tumor. Our two patients are alive with no evidence of disease after 10 years. Pathological and clinical problems of Buschke-Löwenstein tumor were discussed by review of the literature.

Essential protein factors for polyprenyl pyrophosphate synthetases. Separation of heptaprenyl pyrophosphate synthetase into two components.

Heptaprenyl pyrophosphate synthetase from Bacillus subtilis was dissociated into two essential components, none of which had catalytic activity alone. The enzyme activity was restored when the two components were combined with each other. Both fractions, designated components I and II in the order of their elution from DEAE-Sephadex, appeared to be proteins of Mr 30000. Component I was much more stable than component II which was easily destroyed by relatively mild heat treatment. Neither was interchangeable with any of the essential components of hexaprenyl pyrophosphate synthetase of Micrococcus luteus B-P 26.

Three families with hereditary hemolytic anemia and pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase deficiency: electrophoretic and kinetic studies.

Three new variants of pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase (P5N) found in Japan were studied. They are characterized by slow electrophoretic mobility and a high Michaelis constant for cytidine 5'-monophosphate as has been described in previously reported cases, but are unique with respect to the thermostability test and in pH optima. P5N Kumamoto was thermostable and showed a markedly basic shift in the pH optimum. P5N Nagano was thermolabile and had a normal pH optimum. P5N Kurume was thermostable and showed a basic shift in the pH optimum. These data suggest that these variants have structural gene mutations and that they are clearly distinguished from previously reported cases.

Two cases of phosphofructokinase deficiency associated with congenital hemolytic anemia found in Japan.

Two kindreds of phosphofructokinase (PFK) deficiency associated with congenital nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia and mild myopathy were found in Japan. Both probands had jaundice, gallstones, and slight to moderate degree of exercise intolerance. They showed decreased level of red cell PFK activity and no increase of blood lactate in forearm ischemic exercise test. We studied these probands' red cell PFKs by partial purification and condensation. Muscle type isozyme of PFK in both cases was not demonstrable in starch gel electrophoresis and DEAE-Sephadex chromatography. The clinical symptoms are considered to be due to a defect of muscle type isozyme.
