[Xerotomography of the trachea, bronchi and lungs (author's transl)].

The technical principles and the advantages of tomography with the xeroradiographic procedure were presented. The advantages of xerotomography over against film radiography are the simpler exposure procedure, the high degree of picture clarity, the wide range and the additional possibilities for information connected with it. These advantages were illustrated by a few examples. The disadvantage of this method is the high radiation exposure for the patient. For this reason, stricter indications must be required for this examination.

[Load to the lung and spinal cord in the treatment of exophageal carcinoma using telecentric-excentric pendulous 42 MeV betatron irradiation].

Based on measurements with the Alderson phantom as well as on computerized calculations derived from these measurements, a comparison is made between the loads to the lung and spinal cord during irradiation of the esophageal carcinoma by pendulous or fixed fields using photons with an energy of 42 MeV from a 42-MeV-betatron. The optimal dose distribution according to the isodose patterns presented is obtained by means of a combined irradiation technique using ventral fixed fields and telecentric-excentric pendulous irradiation under consideration of equal shares for the focal dose. This method is more appropriate than the other radiation techniques considered for saving the sound tissues concerned i.e. lung and spinal cord and nevertheless administering the necessary cancerocid dose to the tumor and the regionary lymph nodes.

[Xeroradiographic field controls on a telecobalt unit in the thoracic, abdominal and pelvic region and in the extremities].

After having modified the method of direct field control by the telecobalt unit for the cranial region and the neck, it has been possible to effect these controls for the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic region, too. If two sources of radiation are used, it is decisive to cover with lead the zones of half-shadow on the field limits. The technology of direct field control and the advantages for planning and control of the radiation therapy are described.

[Catheter embolisation of the splenic artery as treatment for acute bleeding from varices (author's transl)].

Embolisation of the splenic artery with fibrin foam, in order to stop acute bleeding from varices, was carried out in two patients. This was performed immediately after diagnostic arterial indirect demonstration of the portal vein; by this method it is possible to achieve at least a temporary cessation of bleeding from oesophageal or gastric varices. The procedure is indicated in desparate situations, if intubation has been unsuccessful or has had to be discontinued, when endoscopic sclerosis is contra-indicated or when an emergency shunt cannot be carried out because of poor liver function or the general condition of the patient. Permanent results cannot be expected and recurrence of bleeding cannot be avoided. The use of splenic embolisation depends on stopping the acute bleeding in order to obtain an interval during which liver function can be improved so that a decompressing shunt operation becomes possible subsequently.

[Indirect (arterial) splenoportography and portography in intraphepatic block].

Morphology and flow dynamics in the lieno-mesentericoportal territory were investigated in 15 normal persons and 199 patients with pre/intra and intra-hepatic blocks. Indirect (arterial) splenoportography with selective catherization of the splenic artery provided angiograms varying between good and diagnostically useful in 98% of cases. With injection into the truncus coeliacus, this figure falls to 77%. The various types of collateral circulation are stated and discussed. The scope and limits of the methods are shown by comparative surveys between direct splenoportography and indirect splenoportography and portography, using 16 patients. As far as the chronological sequence of angiographical diagnostics in the intrahepatic block is concerned, the indirect method shall precede direct splenoportography, which shall only be employed if the indirect method of examination does not provide sufficient information, the patient has shunt capacity and an operation is to be performed immediately.

[Lymphogranulomatosis of the lung].

Two collectives of patients with pulmonary involvement in the course of lymphogranulomatosis, one consisting of 48 out of 120 and the other of 13 out of 90 patients, were followed separately because of the different therapeutic conditions. Statistical parameters, such as the frequency of pulmonary implication, age of incidence of the disease, sex proportion, responses to therapy, and number of survivals were studied and compared mutually. Additionally, a differentiation of the morphological manifestations and the anatomic localization was radiographically performed. The problem of clinical staging is discussed.

[Morphology and x-ray picture of the rat lung in experimental lung contusion].

Partial contusion of the lung was performed on 131 albino rats. X-ray and histological findings are comparable with lung contusion in man. Three phases are remarkable. X-ray studies of the thorax do not show impressive changes in spite of histological findings of the lung. This means: X-ray picture of the posttraumatic lung is less eventful than the impressive anatomical histological findings.

[Examination of the organs in the upper abdomen with ultra sound (author's transl)].

Ultrasonography is a harmless reproducibel technique with its own specific indications, an established part of clinical diagnosis in obstetrics, gynecology, ophthalmology, neurology and cardiology. Investigations on the organs of the upper abdomen have greatly extended the indications. Interpreting the sonograms requires experience in providing and evaluating the picture. In part I of this paper normal ultrasonic findings on liver, pancreas, spleen and kidneys are shown and explained on the basis of the physical characteristics of ultrasound techniques and the various ultrasoundtopographic data. This echographic normal anatomy of the organs mentioned enables us to understand pathologic changes shown in part II. An attempt is also made to allocate and evaluate ultrasonography among other diagnostic techniques.

[Xeroradiographic field control in telecobalt therapy of the cranial and ear-nose-throat regions].

The possibility of direct field verification by xeroradiography in Co-60-teletherapy of the head- and ENT-regions is described. By the effect of intensified contours, anatomical details may present themselves sufficiently as to make possible an objective verification of the irradiation. The particular advantages of this method consist in the simple handling and in the acceleration of the therapy preparations as well as in the possibility of documentation of the radiotherapeutic treatment. It has to be examined if the xeroradiographical procedure can be utilized for direct verification of the fields in other regions of the body too.
