A simple model is suggested enabling the comprehensive calculation of pschoacoustic parameters (absolute modulation thresholds, modulation difference limens, and the subjective magnitude of supraliminal modulation differences) for amplitude modulated narrow noise bands. A comparison of experimental and model data reveals good agreement.

Comparison of acidic and basic chromosomal proteins from normal human endometrium and undifferentiated endometrial carcinoma by isoelectric focussing and microgel-electrophoresis.

In the study reported here, non-histamine chromosomal proteins from proliferative and secretory human endometrium, and from undifferentiated endometrial carcinoma have been separated into more than 750 protein components, using a new preparative and highly sensitive analytical method. The following experimental procedure was applied: 1. Dissociation of chromatin under different conditions (variable parameters: ion strength, dissociation agents, shearing, pH), 2. cation exchange chromatography over Bio Rex, 3. preparative fractionation of those non-histamine chromosomal proteins which are not adsorbed on Bio Rex 70 in a Valmet-electrofocusing apparatus, 4. micro-electrophoresis of the focused proteins in microgels containing a continous gradient of polyacrylamide, 5. two-dimensional electrophoresis of the strongly basic chromosomal proteins. There are qualitative differences with respect to the components of this class of proteins between proliferative and secretory endometrium and endometrial carcinoma. The relevance of these results to the control of gene activity is discussed.

[Radiotelemetry of cardiovascular response on a fitness trail (author's transl)].

Continuous radiotelemetry of direct arterial blood pressure and heart rate was performed in eight healthy subjects (seven men, one woman; average age 26 years) on a fitness trail. The results demonstrate that such running represents a maximal effort, at 192/min heart rate (age-related maximum). The heart rate remained constant whether on largely dynamic exercise during running or on largely static effort during gymnastic exercise. During running, blood pressure rose up to 151/79 mm Hg, while gymnastic exercise gave mean values of up to 200/130 mm Hg as a result of sustained muscle contractions and forced breathing. Such uncontrolled maximal effort may be unexpectedly dangerous to persons with cardiovascular disease and fitness trails should not be recommended in the rehabilitation of cardiac patients.

[Marrow wiring in lower-arm fractures of children (author's transl)].

Wiring of the radius marrow in 96 children with fractures of the lower arm or radius always gave adequate stability compared with purely conservative treatment (54 children). Any danger of delayed discovery of secondary dislocation with all its risks can thus be definitely excluded. The method is safe and relatively quick, done in conjunction with any necessary repositioning. Hospitalisation is reduced to a few days,until soft-tissue swelling has gone. Open alignment is indicated only very rarely, in otherwise unresponsive fractures. The small scar at the wrist is acceptable even for girls.
