Specific in vivo binding of d-LSD in rat brain.

A reproducible in vivo d-LSD binding method in rat brain is described, with high affinity (Kd of 5 pmoles/g wet wt), stereospecificity (d- vs. 1-LSD) and regional selectivity. It may be a useful adjunct to in vitro methods for measuring changes in turnover at the synaptic level related to the intact receptor.

[Simultaneous improvement of mood and release of growth hormone by L-5-hydroxytryptophan (Ro 3-5940) in normal subjects (author's transl)].

Infusion of a new soluble ester of L-5-hydroxytryptophan produced euphoria in 34/35 experiments in healthy subjects. Parallel measurements of growth hormone and mood changes showed a similar rise and fall of these two parameters in 8/11 subjects. These results indicate that central stimulatory serotoninergic mechanisms (in addition to the well-known dopaminergic and alpha-adrenergic stimulation) play a role in the control of growth hormone release.

[Depressions with a surprising ending].

Periodicity of depressive episodes over many years, onset of depression entirely unconnected with external circumstances, or spontaneous end without a change in the patient's life situation strongly suggest and endogenous cause. The actual symptomatology alone does not provide direct evidence. The second criterion, the independent onset of an episode, may be difficult to reconstruct. However, a spontaneous and unexpected end is an impressive event and an argument for endogenicity even in cases of apparently reactive or neurotic origin.

Diurnal and seasonal variations in human platelet serotonin in man.

Platelet serotonin (5-HT) was found to be an individually constant parameter correlating with the uptake of exogenous 5-HT. A pronounced diurnal pattern of 5-HT, with a minimum in the afternoon and higher values in the morning and evening, was similar to the diurnal variations in plasma free tryptophan. Platelet 5-HT was significantly higher at 8 a.m. than 4 p.m. in spring but no longer in autumn, and was similar in both men and women. It appeared that peripheral diurnal variations in 5-HT were opposite in phase to the central 5-HT rhythm.

[Social-political aspects of psychological stress].

Emotional stress is often based on defective social conditions like social isolation or the urge for maximal efficiency in production and consumption. The improvement of these social conditions and the elimination of the resulting pathogenic stress is a political task. There is a curious and unrealistic separation of responsibilities which is justified by tradition only: the social part of the therapy is abandoned to political institutions and groups whereas the psychiatrist whose therapy should be comprehensive concerns himself with individual problems only. As he neglects the noxious social circumstances and aims entirely at the social adaptation of the patient the psychiatrist denies the defectiveness of the social conditions as they are and corroborates a system which is the true cause of numerous psychiatric disturbances.

Platelet 3H-imipramine binding sites in depressed patients and healthy controls: a comparison between morning and afternoon samples.

Platelet 3H-imipramine binding was compared between 19 hospitalized, depressed patients and age-matched controls (n = 11). For each individual person blood samples were withdrawn at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on two separate occasions (day 0 and day 28). Mean Bmax and Kd values did not differ between depressed patients and healthy controls at any of the four time-points tested, and no significant differences could be established between the different time-points, though there were irregular intraindividual variations.
