X-ray diagnosis of flat type mucosal carcinoma of the stomach.

The mucosal pattern of the associated IIb on double contrast images was analyzed in order to define the characteristics of minimal cancer invasion. The mucosal surface of the IIb lesion presents an irregular outlined, uneven sized nodular pattern frequently associated with tiny erosions or superficial destructive changes. These minute and delicate abnormalities are demonstrated only on high quality double contrast images. Three typical cases are presented.

Gelation of the complex between kappa-casein and beta-lactoglobulin.

The gelation of the complex between kappa-casein and beta-lactoglobulin was examined. The apparent viscosity of the mixture of kappa-casein and beta-lactoglobulin increased by heat treatment. The mixture formed a gel at the concentration of 8% (w/w). The gel formation was accelerated by the chymosin treatment. The mixture of kappa-casein and beta-lactoglobulin in each concentration of 1.5% gelled by the addition of chymosin after heat treatment. Forming the complex between kappa-casein and beta-lactoglobulin was necessary to the gel formation. Therefore, heat treatment of above 70 degrees C was demanded. Turbidity increased and the relative content of soluble protein decreased accompanied with gel formation. The addition of calcium ion to the heated solution produced an increase in turbidity. The larger the protein concentration was, the larger the breaking stress of the formed gel was. The addition of calcium ion weakened the breaking stress of the gel.

Ozone decontamination of bioclean rooms.

To establish a convenient method for decontaminating bioclean rooms, the effect of ozone at 80 mg/m3 for 72 h was compared with formaldehyde vaporization at an initial concentration of 150 mg/m3 with a gradual decrease to 20 mg/m3 during 72 h. Ozone was found to be inferior to formaldehyde in activity. When the bioclean room was decontaminated twice with ozone, the mean colony count per 10 cm2 was decreased to about the same level as when formaldehyde was used. Ozone had a strong caustic effect upon rubber materials. Despite these disadvantages, ozone decontamination was demonstrated to be superior to formaldehyde vaporization because of convenience, insignificant inhalation of the disinfectant by the hospital staff, and very rapid expulsion of the gas after ventilation. Because the disadvantages of ozone can be easily controlled, this study suggests that ozone decontamination is a promising method for maintaining bioclean rooms.

Secretory-component-producing lung cancer with hypergammaglobulinemia of secretory IgA.

Studies were made on a case of well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the lung in which the serum levels of secretory IgA (sIgA) were very high. Immunofluorescent studies showed that secretory component (SC) was found to be diffusely distributed in cancer cells. The SC was detected in the supernatant of homogenates of cancer tissues from the primary site and lymph node with metastases. The SC extracted from cancer tissue and purified colostral SC were antigenically identical. The authors conclude that the adenocarcinoma cells produced SC and secreted it into the bloodstream and that the binding of SC with polymeric IgA resulted in the hypergammaglobulinemia of sIgA. This appears to be the first reported case of SC-producing lung cancer. The authors' findings suggest that the high serum levels of sIgA in cancer patients may be due to the production and secretion of SC by tumor cells themselves rather than the reabsorption of intraluminal sIgA into the circulation through a damaged epithelium.

Experimental transmission of human subacute spongiform encephalopathy to small rodents. III. Further transmission from three patients and distribution patterns of lesions in mice.

Further experimental transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) from three patients to mice and rats was carried out successfully. The clinical signs and pathologic features of spongiform encephalopathy transmitted to animals were much the same as in previous experiments, except that distribution of the lesions in the mice differed with each inoculated material taken from the patients. These observations suggest that multiplicity of CJD agents, as in the case of scrapie agents.

Morphometric comparison of the vulnerability of peripheral motor and sensory neurons in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The diameter histograms of cell bodies (cytons) in motor neuron columns at the L5 segment of the spinal cord of adult man reproducibly yield three peaks of increasing height: small (Cs), intermediate (Ci), and large (Cl). Histograms of L5 myelinated axons obtained from the ventral root have two peaks of increasing height: intermediate (Ai) and large (Al). In histograms prepared from seven cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the Cl and Al peaks were decreased selectively and severely. This provides evidence for alpha, but not gamma, motor neuron vulnerability. The Cl peak of spinal ganglion neurons and the Al peak of dorsal roots were significantly reduced in number, without a concomitant increase in Ci, Cs, and Ai peaks. This, plus earlier reports of abnormal cutaneous sensation thresholds, abnormal rates of fiber degeneration in cutaneous nerves, and dorsal column demyelination, provides evidence that large afferent neurons are affected in ALS, but to a lesser degree than alpha motor neurons.
