Centrosymmetric and pseudo-centrosymmetric structures refined as non-centrosymmetric.

The behaviour of the Flack parameter for centrosymmetric and pseudo-centrosymmetric crystal structures based on crystal structures published as being non-centrosymmetric is presented. It is confirmed for centrosymmetric structures that the value obtained for the Flack parameter is critically dependent on the Friedel coverage of the intensity data, approaching 0.5 for a coverage of 100% and sticking near the starting value for a coverage of 0%. For pseudo-centrosymmetric structures, even those very close to being centrosymmetric, it is found that it is often possible to obtain significant values of the Flack parameter. A theoretical basis for this surprising result is established. It has also been possible to establish an a priori estimate of the standard uncertainty of the Flack parameter based only on the chemical composition of the compound and the wavelength of the radiation. The paper concludes with preliminary presentations of bias in the Flack parameter and of inconsistent chemical and crystallographic data.

Anti-wurtzite reoriented.

Anti-wurtzite and wurtzite are shown to be the same crystal structure despite the claims of a recent paper describing the crystal structure of the mineral rambergite, Mn(1-x)Fe(x)S, x approximately 0.05. The anti-wurtzite/wurtzite confusion is used as an illustration to help clarify the correct general approach to take in the treatment and presentation of achiral non-centrosymmetric crystal structures.

Symmetry elements in space groups and point groups. Addenda to two IUCr reports on the nomenclature of symmetry.

The definition of 'symmetry element' given in the Report of the IUCr Ad-Hoc Committee on the Nomenclature of Symmetry by de Wolff et al. [Acta Cryst. (1989). A45, 494-499] is shown to contain an ambiguity in the case of space groups P6/m, P6/mmm, P6/mcc and point groups 6/m and 6/mmm. The ambiguity is removed by redefining the 'geometric element' as a labelled geometric item in which the label is related to the rotation angle of the rotation or rotoinversion symmetry operation. The complete set of different types of glide plane is shown to contain three more than the 15 that are illustrated in the 1992 Report by de Wolff et al. [Acta Cryst. (1992). A48, 727-732].
