[Hearing loss caused by a walkman radio?].

Investigations on 50 high school students showed that this group had been using the "Walkman" only 1.5 h. per day during the last 14 months. A comparison of the audiometric results obtained with these 50 "Walkman" users, with those of 20 age-related non-"Walkman" users, showed no statistically significant differences. The investigation further revealed that to avoid hearing loss, an upper threshold level of 93 dB (A) should not be exceeded for a daily "Walkman" user time of two hours.

[Is there noise-induced hearing loss in the low and middle tone frequencies?].

Statistical material was collected on over 1000 patients with noise-induced hearing loss (expert opinions on these patients). All those patients were excluded who showed any other cause for their hearing loss i.e. head trauma, mumps, ototoxic medication, family history of hearing disease, or other causes. 200 patients showed loss of hearing at 250 Hz and 500 Hz of 20 dB or more and at 1000 Hz a hearing loss of at least 30 dB. Several matched-pair investigations with great variability of hearing loss are given. There is substantial evidence to prove that noise may damage the lower and medium frequencies as well as the higher frequencies.

[Contralateral stapedial reflex in children, adults and high-frequency loss hearing impaired patients (author's transl)].

Contralateral stapedius reflexes were measured in 332 patients. Results were analysed and statistically checked with regard to amplitude, slope of reflex in the recovery phase and partial and total reflex area. The results seem to indicate that none of the measure parameters have any direct diagnostic value. Optimal results measuring contralateral stapedius reflex are to be expected at 1000 Hz.

[SMR, Septoplasty and the surgical treatment of septal perforations (author's transl)].

Submucous Resektion (SMR) operation ascribed to Killian-quite commonly taught-has serious deficiencies in some clinical situations. The more rational and conversative technique of septoplasty is explained and its principles and indications discussed. Postsurgical deformities after inappropriate SMR (i.e. septal perforation) can be avoided by performing a well executed conversative septoplasty. Complications of SMR as well as septoplasty are discussed. Some basic principles and indications for closure of nasal septal perforations are described.
