Neurofibroma of the maxillary antrum.

A rare case of neurofibroma of the maxillary antrum is reported. The tumor was removed via a Caldwell-Luc approach. Its histopathologic characteristics are described.

Humans

Tuberculosis of the tongue.

Involvement of the tongue by Mycobacterium tuberculosis occurs on rare occasions. Two interesting cases of tuberculosis of the tongue are reported and the mode of transfer of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to oral tissues is discussed. The need to consider tuberculosis as an etiological factor in indolent oral lesions is emphasised.

Humans

Live fish in right bronchus.

A rare type of foreign body - a live fish - inhaled into the right bronchus has been reported. A small fish may not cast a shadow in the x-ray.

Animals

Juvenile epithelial malignancy of head and neck.

Children aged 15 years or less usually suffer from mesenchymal malignancies. Observations on four rare cases of juvenile epithelial malignancy in larynx, maxillary antrum, upper lip, and parotid are reported. No particular etiological factor could be found in these cases. Age, as such, had no effect on the clinical presentation of the malignancy, its management and prognosis.

Adolescent

Peritonsillolith.

Peritonsillolith appears to be an unknown entity. Two cases of lithiasis in the peritonsillar region following spontaneous rupture of peritonsillar abscesses have been reported. The authors have speculated concerning the cause of stone formation in the peritonsillar region, which has been designated "peritonsillolith," on the basis of lithiasis in other regions of the body, such as gallbladder, kidneys, and salivary glands. Peritonsilloliths most likely form as a result of incomplete evacuation of pus, the dead bacteria and the pus cells providing the nidus for their formation. The salts of these stones are undoubtedly derived from the inflammatory exudates and saliva.

Adenoma, Pleomorphic

Congenital midline fistula of the tongue.

A possibly unknown entity of congenital midline fistula of the tongue, hitherto not mentioned in the literature, is reported. The embryologic basis of it is explained and the role of the tuberculum impar in the development of the anterior two thirds of the tongue is discussed.

Adult

D'emblee type of mycosis fungoides of head and neck.

Mycosis fungoides as a disorder of reticulo-endothelial system occurs in the eczematous or psoriatic stage, progresses to infiltrated plaque stage and finally to tumorous form with or without systemic spread. The head and neck is rarely involved. A case is presented in which the disease process started as a tumor (d'emblee type) and remained localized in the head and neck region without a generalized spread. The tumorous lesion rapidly increased in size and involved deeper tissues of the neck to cause infranuclear facial palsy and medial bulging of the tonsil' it also extended in the superior mediastinum casuing pressure on the trachea and the esophagus. The patient died of respiratory failure.

Aged

Giant cell tumor of the spenoid bone.

The clinical features of the giant cell tumor of the sphenoid bone have been discussed and a case report has been added to the fourteen cases reported in the literature. Such cases may first report to an ophthalmologist, an otolaryngologist, a neurologist, or an internist. They should consider this condition in a patient who complains of headache, ocular symptoms such as diplopia, and diminution of vision progressing to complete blindness. The presence of multiple cranial nerve palsies involving II, III, IV, V, and VI nerves in various combinations and the sellar erosion in the lateral x-ray of the skull are quite suggestive of this tumor which should be confirmed by biopsy. The telecobalt therapy appears to give the best results.

Adult

Audiometric and vestibular abnormalities in macular degeneration.

Audiometric (pure tone audiometry and tone decay) and vestibular examinations (bilateral caloric test and electronystagmography) were carried out in 10 cases of macular degeneration of different types and 10 normal individuals as control. Out of 10 cases of macular degeneration of various types, 3 (30%) showed hearing impairment, while on vestibular examination 3 (30%) also had vestibular abnormalities. Only one case was associated with both audiometric as well as vestibular abnormalities. In the control group none of the individual showed either audiometric or vestibular changes.
