Bedside radiographic examinations: indications and contraindications.

Indications for requesting and performing bedside radiographic examinations in an institutional setting are proposed. A prospective study of such examinations was made in a 500-bed hospital. All nursing units were evaluated for criteria used in requesting bedside examinations. It was found that general medical and surgical wards generate the greatest percentage of bedside studies, and yet their criteria for requesting such studies yielded the lowest percentage of validity. General criteria for utilization of mobile radiographic equipment could lead to better radiographs and improved allocation of equipment and personnel.

Ultrasonic effects on mammalian intestinal muscle membrane.

The effects of ultrasound on the bioelectric activities of rat intestinal muscle were studied. It was found that low level ultrasound of 1.5 W/cm2 inhibited action potentials of the intestinal smooth muscle. This biophysical action of ultrasound had accumulative effects. The presence of high Ca++ in the medium (3.4 mM or 2 x normal [Ca++]) prevented this action of ultrasound. These data suggested that ultrasound probably acted on the calcium influx mechanism of the cell membrane.

Crohn's disease in black patients.

The diagnosis of Crohn's disease in 13 patients (ten females and three males) at the Howard University Hospital during the ten-year period, 1965-1975, is examined. The most common presenting symptoms were right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain, diarrhea, anorexia, weight loss, and vomiting, while the most common physical finding was RLQ tenderness. Ileocolic involvement occurred most frequently. Eight patients had surgical resection. The most frequent operation was ileocolic resection with ileo-ascending colostomy. The chief indications for surgery were: (1) presumed appendicitis, (2) intestinal obstruction, and (3) internal fistulae.Crohn's disease seems to occur in blacks much less frequently than in whites. When compared to series of white patients reported by others, the series studied here has more females and more ileocolic involvement. In most other series, the greatest involvement is in the "ileum only" group.

The many faces of sarcoidosis.

This is a radiographic exhibit demonstrating some of the many ways that pulmonary sarcoidosis can present. In addition to the classical stages (I-IV), sarcoidosis can sometimes present atypically. Some of these forms of sarcoid disease have been included in this exhibit.
