[Aging in a foreign environment].

This article discusses some aspects in Environmental Gerontology concerning the living conditions of elderly foreigners (migrants) who have been living and working in Germany for 20 to 30 years. First, deficits of the present research situation of elderly migrants are described. Second, with regard to the differentiation of "normal aging" and "aging with significant competence losses" two environment-relevant issues are analyzed: Living arrangement (home, residential unit, residential quarter) and the utilization of social services and institutions for the aged. The paper closes with some ideas on "ethnic aging and gerontological research".

[Cognitive and behaviorally relevant aspects of compliance with prescribed drugs by geriatric patients].

Studies of compliance with drug treatment in the elderly have mainly focused on treatment variables, and patient knowledge or comprehension. However, information on behavioral aspects is sparse. Therefore, interviews concerning medication were performed in 31 geriatric patients, mean age 79.6 years. The aim was to evaluate whether there were relations between coping with health problems and attitudes towards/taking of medication prescribed. It was concluded from the analysis of these tape-recorded interviews that different forms of coping strategies were reflected by patients' attitudes towards taking of medicines. There was a high degree of competence perceived by patients, and objectively as well. Nevertheless, when taking drugs patients surprisingly often relied on other persons' support.

[Contribution to the history of gerontology in Germany in the 2nd half of our century].

In this paper some trends of gerontology during the last 45 years in Germany are described. A survey of the development of gerontology in the former GDR is followed by an analysis of the "Zeitschrift für Alternsforschung" from 1980-1990. The main result is the predominance of publications on the care system since the middle of the 1980s. With regard to the development of gerontology in the western part of Germany, an analysis of publications in the "Zeitsschrift für Gerontologie" from 1968-1991 shows changes in the main topics during this period. Until the middle of the 1970s there was a predominance of publications in the field of: intelligence, learning, memory and perception. The emphasis of publications from 1977-1985 was on stress and coping. In the middle of the 1980s there was an increasing interest in the analysis of social network and competence in the elderly. The paper discusses these trends of gerontological research in the eastern and western parts of Germany.

[Daily activities--differences and similarities in the concept between gerontology and nursing care].

For analyzing independent living in the elderly gerontology and nursing often use the concept of activities of daily living. This concept deals with the basic and complex functions of everyday life, which can be useful for describing the functional aspects of independency in old age. The following article focuses on the "classical" contributions from Katz ("Activities of Daily Living") and Lawton and Brody ("Instrumental Activities of Daily Living") which have won a large following in gerontology. Finally, similarities and differences in the comprehension of activities in everyday life between gerontology and nursing are discussed.
