Demonstration of a beta-casomorphin immunoreactive material in the plasma of newborn calves after milk intake.

Blood was collected from newborn calves before and after their first milk intake after birth; extracts of plasma were assayed by radioimmunoassay for the presence of beta-casomorphin-7 immunoreactive materials. No beta-casomorphin immunoreactivity was found in samples collected before milk ingestion; however, in samples collected after milk ingestion a beta-casomorphin-7 immunoreactive material was detected. Chromatographic characterization showed that this material was not identical with beta-casomorphin-7 but might rather represent a precursor thereof. The material proved resistant to enzymatic attack during a 30-min incubation period at 37 degrees C in the plasma of newborn calves, whereas beta-casomorphin-7 was degraded under these conditions. A physiological significance of beta-casomorphin-7 eventually cleaved from such a precursor material at any site in the newborn mammal is suggested.

[Surgical treatment of injuries and positional changes in the vulvoperineal region of cows].

Following a presentation of the various perineal lacerations and the positional changes which occur in the perivulvar area, the surgical correction of these lesions is discussed. Supplementary remarks to the usual surgical methods are made. Among others, a modified suture technique for correcting the combined laceration of Perineum-Ampulla recti-areal (third degree perineal laceration) and a modification of the method for correcting pneumovagina are described.

[Direct and indirect methods of the diagnosis of pregnancy in mares].

This review article deals with a critical comparison between the direct clinical diagnosis for the pregnancy of the mare (rectal and in some cases also vaginal exploration) and indirect methods. Both methods are discussed whether they can be seen as a mutual completion or are suitable for their own. The indirect methods for the pregnancy diagnosis include the hormone-analytic tests as progesterone concentration in serum or milk, the biological and immunological measurements for PMSG in the serum, finally the biological and chemical methods for estrogen contents in the urine of the mare. Furthermore the physical methods mainly the ultrasonic detection are discussed.

[Effect of the beta blockader carazolol (Suacron) on parturition in sows].

It was the aim of this study to investigate the effects of the betablocker carazolol (Suacron) on the birth process of the sow. The drug occupies the betareceptors in different organs without causing the stimulation of adrenaline which induces in part the stress reactions of the organism at these receptors. During delivery the stimulation of the betareceptors of the uterus causes a relaxation of the smooth muscles and, hence, prolongs parturition. It could be illustrated that the intravenous injection of the adrenaline-antagonist carazolol (0.5 mg i.e. 1 ml Suacron/50 kg b.w.) increased the contractions of the uterus sub partu in sows. In a double-blind-trial the same dose of the beta-blocker was administered to sows intramuscularly (n = 523). The rate of deliveries lasting six hours or more was reduced (11.0% vs. 14.5%) in the treated group in comparison with the control group (n = 543) that only received a salt solution. Additionally, the beta-blocker prophylaxis led to a reduced stillbirth rate (7.1% vs. 8.3%), caused less necessity for external aid (6.1% vs. 7.8%), decreased the use of oxytocine (28.9% vs. 34.8%) and managed to diminish the occurrence of puerperal disorders (15.5% vs. 19.5%). These beneficial effects on the farrowing are significant at the 5% level and particularly apparent in sows giving birth to the first litter.
