Experimental studies in rats and bulls demonstrated the feasibility of using a silicone-Dacron prosthesis as a sperm reservoir in cases of excretory azoospermia. In the study of bulls, 50% of the cows inseminated with spermatozoa aspirated from the alloplastic spermatocele conceived and delivered healthy calves. The clinical results of a series of 14 humans suffering from excretory azoospermia not treatable by other means (e.g., epididymovasostomy or vasovasostomy) also are presented. THe aspirations from these spermatoceles produced motile spermatozoa; however, none of the patients'p spouses conceived after insemination.
Consanguineous partners had a boy with campomelic dysplasia who died of increasing respiratory distress soon after birth. The next pregnancy was monitored frequently by ultrasonography and a healthy male infant was born at term. During a further pregnancy, ultrasonography suggested campomelic dysplasia in the 16th week of gestation. This was confirmed in the 18th week. The pregnancy was terminated and the fetus showed the typical radiological, anatomical and histological findings.

Digital images are the ever-growing basis of modern medical imaging and treatment. Despite the advent of the DICOM 3.0 standard for medical image communication it still requires cumbersome efforts to export images from imaging modalities to other computer systems. This is true especially for smaller institutions, which often have limited resources for standardized image transfer. To gain access even to these data we developed an exchange interface on the basis of magneto-optical discs (MO-discs), as they are usually available in most of the imaging modalities in use today. Unfortunately images on MO-discs are usually stored in formats specific for each manufacturer. Therefore special routines to access the data on MO-discs had to be developed for each company or even each scanner. Over 10,000 CT and MRI images including their header information from different General Electric and Siemens scanners were extracted successfully from MO-discs. The interface proved to be reliable and easy to handle by technicians. Support of additional manufacturers and of the DICOM 3.0 standard are work in progress.
Recently, nursing programs that admit nonnurse college graduates to graduate study in nursing have emerged around the country. The University of Texas at Austin has such a program called the Alternate Entry Master of Science in Nursing (AEMSN) program. Using a grounded theory approach, 13 telephone interviews were conducted with alumni of the AEMSN program to examine the socialization of these nontraditional graduates into the profession of nursing. Participants reported some anxiety as they approached graduation. They were particularly aware of a disconnection between their academic credentials and their limited professional nursing experience. To manage others' and their own expectations of them, the participants chose various strategies, such as using positive self-talk and seeking a manager who understood and favored the AEMSN program. Eventually the graduates found places where they felt comfortable and where they could hone their skills. As they began to function in roles that they believed were consistent with master's level nursing, the AEMSN graduates began to embrace the identity of master's-prepared nurses.
Colchicine-treated suspension cultures of Valeriana wallichii produce higher amounts of valepotriates than did the respective untreated cultures. The ability to produce valepotriates in the treated culture remains in the absence of colchicine even if the chromosome status returns to normal. When the colchicine treatment is repeated, a further increase in valepotriate production can be obtained. Besides known valepotriates, a series of fourteen new compounds, hitherto not described for the parent plant, were isolated from the cell suspension culture. Eight of them are also found in plant parts in minor amounts, but six seem to be present only in tissue cultures of V. wallichii.
In a mature dystrophic newborn a huge tumor of the face was evident. The left eye could not be seen, the left choana was obstructed, the left angle of the mouth was pushed caudally. Sonographically cystic and solid areas could be found. The cranial computer tomography showed normal intracerebral structures but some evidence of infiltration into the frontal brain. The left ocula was widened and the left eye was found within the tumor mass. Angiographically an abnormal vascularisation of the tumor could not be seen. In spite of corticoid therapy a rapid growth led to life-threatening obstruction of the airways. At the age of 6 weeks the tumor was totally extirpated. A small piece of dura mater was replaced by periost. The wound could not be closed. Histologically the diagnosis of lymphangioma cysticum congenitum was made and increased growth tendency were found. Four weeks postoperatively the baby was discharged. Several cosmetic operations with unpredictable results will be necessary. A close psychologic guidance is recommended. Localisation, size, and life-threatening growth of a benign lymphangiomum are very uncommon.
