Neuropsychological servosystems, consciousness, and the problem of embodiment.

Recent work in neurophysiology has begun to close the paradigmatic gap between neurophysiology and the psychology of embodied behavior and movement. The present paper surveys these developments, traces the origins of the split between neurophysiology and neuropsychology and suggests that recent work by Pribram may provide a link between the psychology of consciousness, the neurophysiology of movement, and the growing body of work on nonverbal communication.

[Side effects of aminoglycosides: nephrotoxicity (author's transl)].

Animal experiments showed that all aminoglycosides cause similar toxic tubular and glomerular damage when investigated by qualitative morphology. Quantitative differences in the tubular nephrotoxicity of gentamicin, tobramycin, sisomicin, kanamycin, kanendomycin, amikacin, and butirosin can be demonstrated experimentally by evaluation of the excretion rates of tubular cells and urinary enzymes in rats. By this means dose-effect relationships were established resulting in varying reproduceable toxic threshold doses for each antibiotic, and thus in a scale of increasing nephrotoxicity. The aminoglycosides differed in their affinity to kidney tissue as measured by determination of the accumulating renal concentrations of the drugs at different times during multiple-dose administration. This had a modifying influence on excretion rates of cells and enzymes affecting the scale of toxicity in long-term studies. Comparative investigations on nephrotoxicity in rats and guinea pigs gave similar results. In addition, a study in man suggested that the test results of nephrotoxicity are not species-specific. For human therapy it is concluded that even more caution should be practised with the new aminoglycerides than with gentamicin in order to avoid renal damage.

[Traumatic aneurysm of the peripheral cerebral artery].

Two cases of traumatic aneurysm of peripheral cerebral artery were reported. Case 1. A 6-year-old girl was severely injured on her head by automobile accident. Plain skull films showed depressed fracture in the left frontal region. Left common carotid angiogram 25 days after the injury revealed small aneurysm of a cortical branch of the anterior cerebral artery. Cranioplasty and removal of the aneurysm was performed. Postoperative course of this patient was uneventful. Case 2. A 4-year-old girl fell downstaris and struck her left temporal region. On admission, she was unconscious and plain skull films showed multiple linear fractures. No aneurysm was demonstrated in the right common carotid angiogram immediately after the head trauma. Since her general condition gradually improved, she discharged 23 days after the head trauma. 63 days after the injury, she developed sudden onset of severe headache, vomiting, and status epilepticus. Right common carotid angiogram showed a large aneurysm arising from a branch of right pericallosal artery at the free edge of the falx. Parent artery of the aneurysm was clipped. Postoperatively, the patient made uneventful recovery. 60 reported cases of traumatic aneurysm of peripheral cerebral artery were reviewed and analyzed in etiology, diagnosis, clinical course, treatment and pathogenesis.
