Salzburg was the first country in Austria to introduce, in 1971, rubella vaccination for prepuberal girls on a voluntary basis. Of 481 girls, whose antibody titers were controlled in 1972, 132 (27.4%) were seronegative, and control measurements were performed 3, 12, 24, and now 60 months after the vaccination. The conversion rate was 100%, and the geometric mean titer of hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies 3 months after vaccination was 110, 12 months a.v. 135.7, 24 months a.v. 131.7 and 60 months a.v. 113.6.
Nasal fluid immunoglobulin concentration in acute sinusitis nasal fluid IgG, IgA and albumin content were estimated in longitudinal profile in acute and chronic sinusitis patients. Transsudation of these proteins becomes stimulated by acute mucosal inflammation. IgA values correlate with clinical findings. The UgA-concentration in chronic and acute sinusitis is very different.

108 adult patients and 34 children with chronic active hepatitis (CAH) are divided in four groups on the basis of presence and absence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and autoantibodies (AutoAb). There are significant differences in the numeric distribution among the four groups and the sex distribution between adult patients and children, but no differences in the frequencies of the HLA antigens tested. An increased frequency of HLA-B8 (and HLA-A1) compared with normal controls and the other groups is only found in autoimmune types of CAH, characterized as HBsAg-negative, AutoAb-positive CAH. HBsAg-negative, AutoAb-negative forms of CAH are called cyptogenic CAH and these are most likely non-hepatitis B virus induced types of CAH. In these and hepatitis B virus induced forms of CAH no significant deviation of any HLA antigen tested could be found.

Using the average evoked potential technique, angiotensin-II depot effects (1 mg implantate = 3--4 mg/kg body weight angiotensin-II) were studied neuroelectrophysiologically in reticular, hippocampal and neocrotical structures of albino rats. A multivariate variance and discriminance analysis program revealed differentiated changes of the bioelectrical processing data of the CNS. Evidence was obtained for a varying structural sensitivity of central-nervous substructures under depot administration of angiotensin-II. In later phases of angiotensin-II action, the hippocampus was characterized by an electrographic synchronization phenomenon with high-amplitude average evoked potentials. The reticular formation, and to a lesser extent the visual cortex, showed an angiotensin-induced diminution of bioelectrical excitation. However, the intensity of the change in functional CNS patterns did not always correlate with maximal blood pressure rises. The described changes of afference processing to standardized sensory stimuli, especially in hippocampal and reticular structures of the CNS foll owing angiotensin depot action, point to a central-nervous action mechanism of angiotensin-II.
Neurophysiological studies were conducted with subhuman primates (macaca mulatta) in order to obtain an estimate of central nervous effects of socio-emotional stress. This was combined with continuously aggravated conditioning procedures in view of the possible significance of chronic environmental stress escalation for etiology and pathogenesis of an arterial hypertension model. Our conclusions are based on evoked potentials (EP) as integrative characteristics of cerebral information processing. The EPs were recorded by means of electrodes chronically implanted in brain structures of emotional and cardio-vascular relevance. Multivariate mathematico-statistical analyses of average EPs (AEP) provide an objective measure of stress sensibility of the individual, particularly of the effects of acute and chronic environmental stress factors upon the functional organization of the CNS. By means of a quantitative approach to AEP we were able to demonstrate a disjunction between distinct limbic and hypothalamic structures starting under stress conditions of subchronic character. We assume that the constancy of functionally antagonistic hyperactive excitation foci at diencephalic and supradiencephalic levels and their specific interaction with the equally stress related neocortical functional insufficiency constitutes a decisive pathogenetic central mechanism of neurotic behaviour. Long-term changes of amplification of external and internal afferences could be demonstrated on the basis of hypo- and hyperreactive neuroelectric functional patterns. These processes cause cerebro-visceral regulatory diseases as, e. g., a primary arterial hypertension by restriction of neocortical control and the corresponding efferent reactions for re-establishment of the dynamic homeostasis.
Blood pressure, heart rate, respiration frequency and ECG parameters were measured in 3 juvenile male rhesus monkeys under acute and chronic influence of a stepped load schedule including positive (nutritional), negative (pain-related) and socially operant conditioning and phases of a pharmacological sensibilization (angiotensin-II) of the cardiovascular system. The results suggest a general adaptation to the positively operant conditioning, while the latter stressing influences (either single or in combination) produced blood pressure and heart rate elevations, which had the character of dysregulatory functional changes (borderline hypertension model) and were reached by other authors, if at all, only through stronger stress influences.
Changes in relationships between behavioural repertoire, motility, and diastolic blood pressure were studied in rhesus monkeys under socio-emotional stress exposure. The frequency of behavioural patterns is a function of diastolic blood pressure. The initial stage of stress (normal BP) induced affective manifestation of aversion, tendency of spatial changeability and reactions of shock-avoidance. The late phase of stress (elevated BP) is associated with increased communicative control of social distance and physiological alterations: increased arousal, lability of autonomic functions and itching. The behavioural patterns of environmental integration were decreased with elevated diastolic blood pressure, in favour of comfort actions.
Dihydrofolate reductase from bovine liver has been purified 5000-fold employing conventional techniques and methotrexate/aminohexyl/Sepharose affinity chromatography. Electrophoresis of the isolated enzyme on polyacrylamide gels resulted in the separation of two enzymatically active protein components which were not interconvertible by treatment with dihydrofolate and/or the coenzyme. The two forms, present in a ratio of 20:1, were found by isoelectric focusing to have isoelectric points of 7.15 and 5.94. They had identical specific activities toward dihydrofolate (26.1-27.0 U/mg) and folate (1.3-2.2 U/mg), and had identical molecular weights (23500) and amino acid compositions. Due to the small quantity of the acidic form and the similarity of the two forms, the amino-terminal sequence (19 residues) was determined on a mixture of carboxymethylated reductase. The single sulfhydryl group of the enzyme can be modified by several sulfhydryl reagents in the native enzyme without loss of activity. Modification of the same residue occurs in the denaturated state and partially inhibits renaturation to the fully acitve enzyme. One disulfide bridge was detected by reduction and alkylation. The cleavage of this bond did not effect the enzymatic activity.
The substance, PS-1, produced in the paragonial gland of adult male Drosophila funebris influences the mating behavior of virgin female flies after injection. The substance was isolated and characterized as a 27-residue peptide. The complete amino acid sequence was determined by manual sequence analysis of tryptic peptides, automated Edman degradation, and carboxypeptidase A digestion. The sequence is Asp-Val/Leu-Pro-Ser-Ala-Asn-Ala-Asn-Ala-Asn-Gln-Arg-Thr-Ala-Ala-Ala-Lys-Pro-Gln-Ala-Asn-Ala-Glu-Ala-Ser-Ser. The ratio of Val : Leu in the second position of the sequence is 7:3. This is the first detailed report on an insect peptide which causes a biological response in the opposite sex following mating.
An oral histidine loading test (100 mg L-His/kg body weight) was performed in 8 deaf patients with low histidase activity in the str. corneum of the skin. Beside an elevated plasma phenylalanine level resulting in a Phe/Tyr-quotient of 1,09 +/- 0,15 the basal level of histidine was slightly enhanced in patients with deafness, but without statistical significance. After histidine loading no differences of the histidine tolerance curves could be observed suggesting the heterozygosity state for histidinaemia. Thin-layer chromatographic investigation of imidazole compounds revealed some abnormal findings after loading. The results are discussed with regard to the clinical and biochemical heterogeneity of histidinaemia.
Albino rats and rhesus monkeys with chronically implanted electrodes in cortical and subcortical, vasomotory and emotionally relevant brain regions were subjected to psycho-nerval stress (short-term stressful CR learning experiments on rats, long-term environmental stress with disturbances of the diurnal rhythm and social hierarchy on rhesus monkeys). Applying average computer techniques and discriminance analyses to evoked potentials (average evoked potentials = AEP to standardized optic-acoustic test stimuli) we were able to objectify the effect of different stress categories on central nervous functional patterns. These phenomena of electrical activity of the CNS proved to be extremely responsive to the stress exposure (avoidance conditioned learning experiments or socio-emotional overstrain). Under moderated stress (CR phases of acquisition and stabilization), time-space patterns of a primary facilitation of AEP could be established, expressing an improved energetic capacity of the CNS (adaptive effect). On the other hand, there was a generalized impairment of bioelectric information processing in temporal correlation with an increase in psycho-nervous stress exposure to rats (CR phases of differentiation). During long-term socio-emotional stress exposure of rhesus monkeys the highly significant changes of AEP-patterns (increasing fall short of the set point of the bioelectric level of activity with segmental differences in the multiphasic evoked potential) are to be interpreted as maladaptive processes in central nervous function under long lasting high stress conditions.
