Flow phenomena can cause artifacts that may simulate thrombosis. The differentiation between thrombus and flow phenomenon can be made by delayed scans and certain CT-findings in thrombosis that may not be found in pseudothrombosis.

Results of electron microscopic studies on orthotopic and auxiliary syngeneic liver transplants in rats are presented. Examinations were performed about 50 d after both types of liver transplantation. The results obtained in auxiliary transplants in the form of collagenisation within intracellular and Disse's spaces, focal hepatocyte degeneration, the appearance of numerous myelin structures in the form of membranes, and increase in number of microvilli on the hepatocyte surface together with their elongated shape indicate a disadvantageous influence of the host's liver on the transplant. In orthotopically transplanted livers only proliferation of biliary canaliculi and degeneration of hepatocytes at low grade were observed.
The ATPase activity of rabbit-kidney brush border can be activated almost equally well by Ca2+ and Mg2+ and, therefore, should be called (Ca2+ or Mg2+)-ATPase. This enzyme was solubilized and enriched 14-fold by the following steps: pretreatment with papain removed 69% of alkaline phosphatase without attacking a significant portion of the ATPase activity. Addition of 1% cholate removed 65% of the protein but no ATPase activity. The combination of cholate (0.5%) and deoxycholate (0.4%) solubilized most of the ATPase activity and most of the remaining protein. A column chromatography of the extract on Sepharose CL-2B resulted in an 6.5-fold increase of specific ATPase activity. A precipitation by ammonium sulfate (40% saturation) produced an additional 1.9-fold increase. The yield of this partial purification was 16%. Towards the nucleotides UTP and GTP the enzyme showed an activity slightly higher, and towards ITP and CTP an activity slightly lower than that with ATP. ADP was split about half as fast as ATP. AMP was not accepted by the enzyme. Replacing MgCl2 by CaCl2 resulted in an ATPase activity of 92% of that with MgCl2. Using calcium- and magnesium-ATP as substrates, apparent Km values of 0.22 and 0.33 mM, respectively, were obtained. The gel electrophoresis revealed the enrichment of a protein with an apparent Mr of 95000 and also that of microvillus actin.

A cytochemical study of hepatocyte nuclei of adrenalectomized and irradiated rats were performed. After irradiation alone the behaviour of the ribonucleoprotein components was studied according to Bernhard. The findings suggested that a delay occurs in the synthesis of preribosomal RNA in the nucleoli and in the transport of messenger RNA to the cytoplasm. The indirect effect of ionizing radiation on nuclear RNA synthesis is assumed to occur through the influence of cortical steroid hormones on the transcription process.
The structure of normal and toxemic pregnancy (EPH-gestosis) placenta was analysed by goniometric observation. Hitherto the most characteristic symptom of gestotic placenta demonstrable by measurements appeared to be thickening of the placental basallayer consisting of the basal membranes of the capillary endothelium and syncytiotrophoblast. Observations were now made on 20 normal placentas and on 20 ones with full-clinical gestotic symptoms. Specimens prepared by conventional methods were examined with a Philips EM 300 electron microscope, equipped with a goniometer stage. Measurements of the placental basal layer in three goniometer positions: 0 degrees, + 45 degrees, - 45 degrees, were made from negatives of electron micrographs with a final magnification 135,200 x. Data were analysed statistically using Wilcoxon's test. We also used the planimetric-statistic method of Casley-Smith and Davy. We found the thickness of the gestotic placental basal layer to be significantly less than in a normal one. Ultrastructural markers of transport through the feto-maternal blood barrier were more evident that in normals. We suppose the increased placental transport and decreased thickness of the placental basal layer could be compensatory reactions to the pathological lesions of gestotic pregnancy.

Cytochemical study of hepatocytes nuclei of the liver irradiated with a dose of 650 rad and irradiated after partial hepatectomy was performed. Morphological exponents of the intensive synthesis of preribosomal RNA in the nucleolus, as well as the transcription of heterogeneous RNA contained in perichromatin fibrils were revealed under the ionizing radiation effect. The behavior of perichromatin granules in the course of the experiment suggests delay in the transport of messenger RNA to cytoplasm, influenced by gamma radiation. Nuclear bodies were observed very often in nuclei of hepatocytes of irradiated animals.
Spin label studies of erythrocyte membranes from patients with Down's syndrome showed no differences in the rigidity of membrane lipids with respect to normal subjects and a tendency for alterations in the state of membrane proteins. Electron microscopic studies demonstrated the occurrence of ultrastructural defects in membranes from trisomics which can be due to accelerated red cell aging as similar alterations were found in the fraction of oldest (most dense) cells in normal subjects.

The alteration of the ultrastructure of lungs was investigated in the course of the early shock period in the experimental burn disease. The histologic investigations of the lungs were carried out with the Philips 300 electron microscope. A stronger scaling of the surfactant of alveoli was observed in the first days after the burn. Number and size of the myelin structures in the pneumocytes typ II increased simultaneously. The walls of the capillaries were not injured. An edema of th capillary endothelium was observed frequently. The most extensive alterations of ultra structure of lungs appeared in the course of the burn disease on the first or the second day after the thermic injure.

The study was intended to research the changes in the fine structure of thymus in old mice. The research were made in 3 strains of mice (Swiss, Porton and C 57 BL). In the stroma of the senile thymus takes place--full disappearance of mesenchymal reticular cells, as well as the considerable reduction of thymocytes, which were digested by macrophages. In the involuted thymus a large number of plasma cells and lymphoblasts were present. The author suggest the hypothesis that involution has an immunologic character.
