The effect of nursing or rampant caries on height, body weight and head circumference.

In this study, the effect of nursing bottle caries and rampant caries on height, weight and head circumference was evaluated. For this purpose, 126 children, aged 3 to 5 years old, who have nursing or rampant caries were selected. One hundred twenty-six children with no caries and similar age and sex were matched as a control group. When the children who had rampant or nursing caries were evaluated in the direction of the mean weight, it was corresponding to mean weight between 25th and 50th percentiles. The mean percentile weight for control group were corresponding to mean weight between the 50th and 75th percentiles. Of the nursing or rampant caries children, 7.1% weighed less than 80% of their ideal weight, compared with only 0.7% of the control group children. When the children, who had rampant or nursing caries, were evaluated in the direction of the mean height, it was corresponding to mean height between 10th and 25th percentiles. The mean percentile height for control group were corresponding to mean height between the 25th and 50th percentiles. When the head circumference is evaluated, there was no significant statistical difference between the two groups. Since the height and weight of the control group showed a higher percentile category than the nursing or rampant caries group, (P<0.001), it can be stated that rampant or nursing caries may correlate with adversely affected growth of the body.

Protein A carrying monosize PMMA microbeads for the removal of HIgG from human plasma.

Protein A-incorporated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microbeads were investigated for specific removal of HIgG from human plasma. The microbeads were prepared by a phase inversion polymerization, and activated by periodate oxidation. Protein A was then incorporated by covalent binding onto these microbeads through hydroxyl groups coming from the stabilizer. The amount of incorporated protein A was controlled by the initial concentrations of protein A in the immobilization medium and pH. The maximum protein A immobilization of 0.615 mg protein A/g PMMA, was observed at a pH of 9.5 corresponding to an initial protein A concentration of 0.1 mg/ml. There was no HIgG adsorption onto the plain PMMA microbeads, while high HIgG adsorptions of up to 32 mg HIgG/g PMMA were achieved with human plasma.

Influencing factors of nursing caries.

This study was done to determine some of the effecting factors in the formation of nursing caries. For this purpose, 161 children with nursing caries, aged 2 to 5 years, were chosen. The control group was formed by 181 children with no caries. The ratio of giving up the habits in the group having nursing caries during the 12 months period was lower than the control group. The children falling asleep with the nursing caries bottle and a more incidence of nursing caries compared to those who did not. It was found that the type of carbohydrate liquid did not have a different effect in the formation of nursing caries. Commenced toothbrushing age did not show significant differences between those who developed nursing caries and those who did not. Even though the families had enough knowledge about the formation of caries, this was unable to stop the formation of the phenomenon.

Phagocytosis of monosize polystyrene-based microspheres having different size and surface properties.

In this study, nondegradable monosize polystyrene (PS) based polymeric microspheres with different size and surface chemistries were prepared by different polymerization techniques. Surfaces of the plain microspheres were further modified biologically by albumin (BSA) or fibronectin (Fn) preadsorption. Phagocytosis of these polymeric microspheres by leukocytes and macrophages were investigated. The phagocytic response of both leukocytes and macrophages decreased by increasing size of the particles. More hydrophilic particles phagocytosed less. Positive charges increased the uptake while negative charges oppositely reduced the uptake. BSA on the surface almost prevented the uptake, while Fn caused opsonization.

Monosize microbeads based on polystyrene and their modified forms for some selected medical and biological applications.

Polymeric particles are produced by different polymerization techniques. Phase inversion (dispersion) polymerization is one of the recent techniques to obtain monosize polymeric microbeads in the size range of 1-50 microns. The size and monodispersity of these microbeads can be adjusted by using several solvent systems (e.g., alcohol-water mixtures) with different polarities and by changing the type and amount of monomer, initiator and stabilizer. Surfaces of these microbeads can be further modified by different techniques including coating with different copolymers. Monosize polymeric microbeads are widely used in medical and biological applications as carriers, such as in immunoassays and cell separation, in site-specific drug delivery systems, in nuclear medicine for diagnostic imaging, in studying the phagocytic process, in affinity separation of biological entities, etc. Here, some important aspects of the production of monosize microbeads based on polystyrene and their modified forms are briefly discussed, and some selected medical and biological applications are summarized.

[Neonatal sepsis].

We noticed coagulase positive staphylococcus is the most common pathogen in the neonatal sepsis in our neonatology unit. We followed 22 cases with neonatal sepsis. Blood cultures revealed coagulase staphylococcus in 9 cases, coagulase negative staphylococcus in 6 cases, Pseudomonas spp. in 5 cases, E. coli in 1 case, Klebsiella spp. in 1 case. The most common symptom was apnea. CRP positivity was noted in 15 cases (68.2%) while increase in immature/total neutrophil ratio was observed in 12 cases (54.5%). However, we detected leukopenia in 2 cases (9.1%). Also, the birthweight of the cases died due to neonatal sepsis were below 2000 gr.

[A serologic study of human Brucella canis infections in the bursa region].

Serum samples of 123 patients of various ages and both sexes from Bursa area were tested by Mercaptoethanol Tube Agglutination Test on a random basis for Br. canis antibodies. Two patients, one male and one female, showed high titers (1:400) in mercaptoethanol tube agglutination test. A titer of 1:200 or higher was considered significant and indicative of active infection. Br. canis infection in man in Turkey is reported for the first time.

AMT catalepsy and hypokinesia: interaction with morphine and cocaine.

Acute morphine induced a dose-dependent hypokinesia and rigidity, but only mild and non-dose-dependent catalepsy. AMT, injected 1/2 h after morphine, slightly potentiated catalepsy but not hypokinesia during 3 h after morphine; in contrast, rigidity was decreased. The behavioral changes induced by AMT were accelerated in onset and reached their usual development, although AMT toxicity and hypothermia were completely antagonized; thus, it would appear that AMT hypokinesia/catalepsy are not the consequence of toxicity. When morphine was injected 4 h after AMT, a mutual potentiation of the two drugs on hypokinesia and catalepsy was observed, although previous biochemical measurements had shown no effect of morphine on CA depletion under these conditions. Rigidity appeared to be antagonized. After 17 days of repeated injections, morphine no longer elicited hypokinesia and catalepsy, but no cross-tolerance developed to the AMT behavioral changes. A similar lack of cross-tolerance to the effects of AMT or haloperidol was observed when morphine tolerance was induced by pellet implantation. Catalepsy and hypokinesia developed in a much more pronounced way after two large i.p. doses than after small, multiple administration of AMT; this difference was accompanied by a significantly lower concentration of brain DA, but not NA in the former group. The hyperthermic response observed after a 40 mg/kg s.c. injection of morphine was reversed to hypothermia when the same dose was given 4 or 10 h after CA synthesis inhibition. Cocaine strongly antagonized AMT hypokinesia and catalepsy when given 8 1/2 h after AMT, and, although to a lesser extent, even when injected 12 1/2 h after AMT.
