Effect of atropine and methiamide on vagally induced gastric acid secretion and gastrin release in anesthetized cats.

Gastrin release and HCl secretion was induced by electrical vagal stimulation in anesthetized cats. Both atropine (0.1-0.3 mg/kg) and methiamide (4-20 mg/kg) inhibited the HCl secretion (by approximately 60 and approximately 80 %). On the other hand, neither atropine (0.2-2 mg/kg) nor methiamide (20 mg/kg) inhibited the vagally induced gastrin release. Possible explanations of the atropine resistance of the vagal gastrin release mechanism are discussed.

A morphological study of the prostatic lobes and the seminal vesicles of castrated rats injected with oestradiol and/or insulin.

The growth of the ventral and dorsolateral prostate, the coagulating glands and the seminal vesicles was studied morphologically in castrated rats following 21 daily injections of oestradiol benzoate or protamine zinc insulin alone or in combination. Oestradiol benzoate was given in daily doses of 0.010 mg, protamine zinc insulin in daily doses of 10 IU. In the ventral and dorsolateral prostate oestradiol had an androgen-like action inducing epithelial growth and secretory activity in the epithelium. In the seminal vesicles and coagulating glands oestradiol induced an increased fibromuscular growth. Protamine zinc insulin induced growth and secretory activity in the dorsolateral prostate, while no such effect was observed in the other accessory reproductive glands. Protamine zinc insulin accentuated the androgen-like action of oestradiol benzoate on the epithelium of the dorsolateral prostate but did not influence on the increased fibromuscular growth seen after oestradiol in the coagulating glands and the seminal vesicles.

Tone audiometry control of children treated for meningitis with large intravenous doses of ampicillin.

Thirty-seven children treated for bacterial meningitis with ampicillin in high doses were followed up with audiometric control. Defects were recorded in 6 cases. Two of these were ascribed to chronic otosalpingitis. In 4 patients with sensorineural hearing loss, 3 were unilateral, and in only one case was the damage bilateral. Even here there was a previous history of hearing loss. A suggested ototoxicity of ampicillin could not be confirmed.

Effects of a fat-reduced diet on the faecal excretion of radioactivity following administration of 14C-cholic acid and on the duodenal concentration of bile salts in patients with ileal disease.

The fraction of faecal radioactivity excreted after intravenous administration of 14C-labelled cholic acid decreased in most patients with ileopathy and bile salt malabsorption when the dietary daily fat content was reduced from 100 to 40 g. The decreased faecal cholic acid loss might be due to increased bile salt absorption and decreased emptying of the gall-bladder on the fat-reduced diet. A simplified method to determine the corrected 24-hour excretion of radiologically labelled bile salts is described.

The penetration of doxycycline into CSF.

After single oral or intravenous doses of doxycycline the concentrations found in the spinal fluid did not exceed 0.1 mcg/ml. Daily oral administration for 2-10 days gave a level in the spinal fluid of 0.1-0.76 mcg/ml. The mean value, 0.37 mcg/ml, corresponded to 14% of the concentrations found in serum. Further studies of the penetration of doxycycline in patients with a damaged blood-brain barrier should be performed before doxycycline can be recommended for the treatment of CNS-infections.

Auto-immune atrophic gastritis in patient with dermatitis herpetiformis.

Seventeen patients with dermatitis herpetiformis were tested for gastric hydrochloric acid secretion. Seven were found to be achlorhydric. Atrophic gastritis in these patients probably had an auto-immune pathogenesis, as judged by elevated serum gastrin level, high prevalence of antibodies against gastric parietal cells and antrum sparing of the gastric atrophy. This type of atrophic gastritis is considered to indicate a precursor state to pernicious anemia.
