Liquid-liquid phase transition for an attractive isotropic potential with wide repulsive range.

We investigate how the phase diagram of a repulsive soft-core attractive potential, with a liquid-liquid phase transition in addition to the standard gas-liquid phase transition, changes by varying the parameters of the potential. We extend our previous work on short soft-core ranges to the case of large soft-core ranges, by using an integral equation approach in the hypernetted-chain approximation. We show, using a modified van der Waals equation we recently introduced, that if there is a balance between the attractive and repulsive part of the potential this potential has two fluid-fluid critical points well separated in temperature and in density. This implies that for the repulsive (attractive) energy U(R)(U(A)) and the repulsive (attractive) range w(R)(w(A)) the relation U(R)/U(A) proportional to w(R)/w(A) holds for short soft-core ranges, while U(R)/U(A) proportional to 3w(R)/w(A) holds for large soft-core ranges.

Stripe patterns in two-dimensional systems with core-corona molecular architecture.

The behavior of a two-dimensional system of particles interacting through a potential consisting of a hard core surrounded by a soft repulsive corona is investigated at several densities and temperatures. We find that the competition between hard and soft repulsions gives origin to the spontaneous formation of spatial patterns resembling stripe textures. The effect of varying the hard and soft core radii ratio as well as that of adding an attractive component to the interparticle interaction is studied. The model investigated is relevant for macromolecular topologies possessing two intrinsic length scales.

Polymorphism in simple liquids: a Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo study.

We perform Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) simulations of a one-component system of hard spheres with a repulsive shoulder and an attractive well. We show the existence of two distinct liquid-gas and liquid-liquid phase equilibria. The GEMC estimate of the critical parameters, as following from an interpolation of the binodal points, is only slightly influenced by finite size effects. The liquid-gas critical temperature and pressure are lower than those of the liquid-liquid phase separation. A discussion of our findings in comparison with those of previous numerical studies is also presented.

Stripe phases from isotropic repulsive interactions.

One of the most striking signatures of self-organization is spontaneous pattern formation. Among the morphologies observed, stripes are intrinsically fascinating and have potential for technological applications including nanolithography and nanoelectricity. Examples of materials featuring stripe patterns include Langmuir monolayers, magnetic films, lipid monolayers, liquid crystals and polymer films. Stripe formation is generally attributed to the competition between short-range attractive forces and long-range repulsion arising from dipole interactions. Here we show that stripe phases may result from a different mechanism based on a purely repulsive isotropic short-range pair potential with two characteristic length scales. We consider a two-dimensional (2D) assembly of particles consisting of a hard core surrounded by a soft corona and find that at densities where the hard-and-soft core radii compete with each other, decreasing the temperature induces a transition from a disordered state to an orientationally ordered phase characterized by stripe patterns.
