Nonunity gain quantum nondemolition measurements based on measurement and repreparation.

We demonstrate experimentally a nonunity gain quantum nondemolition measurement based on a simple homodyne measurement and recreation strategy. Although the output state is an amplified version of the input state, the device meets standard criteria for QND measurements: the transfer coefficient was measured to 1.78, and the conditional variance was measured to 0.66.

Many-body quantum dynamics of polarization squeezing in optical fibers.

We report new experiments that test quantum dynamical predictions of polarization squeezing for ultrashort photonic pulses in a birefringent fiber, including all relevant dissipative effects. This exponentially complex many-body problem is solved by means of a stochastic phase-space method. The squeezing is calculated and compared to experimental data, resulting in excellent quantitative agreement. From the simulations, we identify the physical limits to quantum noise reduction in optical fibers. The research represents a significant experimental test of first-principles time-domain quantum dynamics in a one-dimensional interacting Bose gas coupled to dissipative reservoirs.

Universal optical amplification without nonlinearity.

We propose and experimentally realize a new scheme for universal phase-insensitive optical amplification. The presented scheme relies only on linear optics and homodyne detection, thus circumventing the need for nonlinear interaction between a pump field and the signal field. The amplifier demonstrates near optimal quantum noise limited performance for a wide range of amplification factors.

Experimental demonstration of coherent state estimation with minimal disturbance.

We investigate the optimal trade-off between information gained about an unknown coherent state and the state disturbance caused by the measurement process. We propose several optical schemes that can enable this task, and we implement one of them, a scheme that relies on only linear optics and homodyne detection. Experimentally we reach near optimal performance, limited only by detection inefficiencies. In addition, we show that such a scheme can be used to enhance the transmission fidelity of a class of noisy channels.

Efficient polarization squeezing in optical fibers.

We report on a novel and efficient source of polarization squeezing that uses a single pass through an optical fiber. Using the fiber's two orthogonal polarization axes produces two identical squeezed beams. Combining these in a Stokes measurement generates polarization squeezing of up to 5.1 +/- 0.3 dB. Furthermore, this scheme enables us to directly measure, for both polarizations, the noise of any given quadrature.

Experimental demonstration of continuous variable quantum erasing.

We experimentally demonstrate the concept of continuous variable quantum erasing. The amplitude quadrature of the signal state is labeled to another state via a quantum nondemolition interaction, leading to a large uncertainty in the determination of the phase quadrature due to the inextricable complementarity of the two observables. We show that by erasing the amplitude quadrature information we are able to recover the phase quadrature information of the signal state.

Diversity detection of speckles for double-wavelength interferometry on rough surfaces.

When the topography of a rough surface is measured with a double-wavelength interferometer, the phase error of the signal corresponding to the synthetic wavelength increases in the vicinity of dark speckles. To overcome this problem we perform an amplitude-dependent averaging of the synthetic phase over independent speckles (diversity detection). We either use spatially neighboring speckles or in the case of depolarizing surfaces, we use speckles of the same spatial mode, but with orthogonal polarizations. For the latter case the lateral resolution stays unaffected. The reduction of the speckle noise is demonstrated experimentally for a laterally scanning double-wavelength interferometer with superheterodyne detection of the synthetic phase.
