Tuning the polarization along linear polyaromatic strands for rationally inducing mesomorphism in lanthanide nitrate complexes.

The opposite orientation of the ester spacers in the rodlike ligands L 4C12 (benzimidazole-OOC-phenyl) and L 5C12 (benzimidazole-COO-phenyl) drastically changes the electronic structure of the aromatic systems, without affecting their meridional tricoordination to trivalent lanthanides, Ln(III), and their thermotropic liquid crystalline (i.e., mesomorphic) behaviors. However, the rich mesomorphism exhibited by the complexes [Ln(L 4C12)(NO3)3] (Ln=La-Lu) vanishes in [Ln(L 5C12)(NO3)3], despite superimposable molecular structures and comparable photophysical properties. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependant DFT calculations performed in the gas phase show that the inversion of the ester spacers has considerable effects on the electronic structure and polarization of the aromatic groups along the strands, which control residual intermolecular interactions responsible for the formation of thermotropic liquid-crystalline phases. As a rule of thumb, an alternation of electron-poor and electron-rich aromatic rings favors intermolecular interactions between the rigid cores and consequently mesomorphism, a situation encountered for L 4C12, L 5C12, [Ln(L 4C12)(NO3)3], but not for [Ln(L 5C12)(NO3)3]. The intercalation of an additional electron-rich diphenol ring on going from [Ln(L 5C12)(NO3)3] to [Ln(L 6C12)(NO3)3] restores mesomorphism despite an unfavorable orientation of the ester spacers, in agreement with our simple predictive model.

Synthesis, structure and properties of {M4O4} cubanes containing nickel(II) and cobalt(II).

A survey of the crystal structures containing simple {M4O4} cubane units is reported. It shows that the average M-M distance in these complexes is relatively constant for a given metal ion M. The structures are all distorted from the idealised cube to a T(d) structure, and most show a further distortion which, however, usually maintains some elements of symmetry. A system for classifying the different types of ligand in these complexes is proposed. Two new cubanes of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) with the ligand (R,R)-bis-1,2-(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)ethane-1,2-diol, (R,R)- or its enantiomer have been isolated and the crystal structure of the cobalt(II) complex confirms the cubane structure. Electronic, CD and (1)H NMR spectra and magnetic susceptibility data are reported. The magnetic data for these and other compounds in the literature are discussed in terms of the structural parameters.

Synthetic selectivity through avoidance of valence frustration.

A series of di-copper(I) complexes has been prepared via the reaction of copper(I) tetrafluoroborate, 2,6-diformylpyridine, 8-aminoquinoline, and a series of aliphatic diamines and 4-substituted anilines. To avoid a "valence-frustrated" state, involving a mismatch between the number of ligand donor atoms and the number of metal acceptor sites, the product structures formed selectively: One of the formyl groups of the diformylpyridine reacted specifically with the aminoquinoline, whereas the other formyl group reacted with the diamine or aniline. The observed selectivity was demonstrated to be thermodynamic in nature: When two dicopper complexes that were stable yet "valence-frustrated" were mixed, an imine metathesis reaction was observed to occur spontaneously to generate a "valence-satisfied" structure. In addition to control over the constitution of the ligands, we were able to exercise control over their relative orientations within the complex. Diamines exclusively gave structures in which the ligand exhibited a head-to-head orientation along the copper-copper axis to avoid stretching. Anilines gave predominantly head-to-tail structures, with the proportion of head-to-head isomer decreasing in complexes that incorporate more electron-deficient anilines and disappearing in less polar solvents. We also demonstrated the removal of the metals and the hydrogenation of the imine bonds to generate a molecule containing nonexchanging secondary amines, suggesting potential uses of this technique in the domain of organic synthesis.

EPR and DFT studies of the structure of phosphinyl radicals complexed by a pentacarbonyl transition metal.

Paramagnetic complexes M(CO)5P(C6H5)2, with M = Cr, Mo, W, have been trapped in irradiated crystals of M(CO)5P(C6H5)3 (M = Cr, Mo, W) and M(CO)5PH(C6H5)2 (M = Cr, W) and studied by EPR. The radiolytic scission of a P-C or a P-H bond, responsible for the formation of M(CO)5P(C6H5)2, is consistent with both the number of EPR sites and the crystal structures. The g and 31P hyperfine tensors measured for M(CO)5P(C6H5)2 present some of the characteristics expected for the diphenylphosphinyl radical. However, compared to Ph2P*, the 31P isotropic coupling is larger, the dipolar coupling is smaller, and for Mo and W compounds, the g-anisotropy is more pronounced. These properties are well predicted by DFT calculations. In the optimized structures of M(CO)5P(C6H5)2 (M = Cr, Mo, W), the unpaired electron is mainly confined in a phosphorus p-orbital, which conjugates with the metal d(xz) orbital. The trapped species can be described as a transition metal-coordinated phosphinyl radical.

Helicate, macrocycle, or catenate: Dynamic topological control over subcomponent self-assembly.

The aqueous reaction between equimolar amounts of 2-(2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethoxy)ethanamine, 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dialdehyde and copper(I) produced a dimeric helical macrocycle in quantitative yield. This ring could also be generated by the addition of two equivalents of the diamine to an acyclic helicate containing four mono-imine residues: A transimination occurred, the chelate effect being implicated as a driving force. In the case of a helicate containing mono-imines derived from anilines, the substitution of diamine for monoamine was reversible upon lowering the pH. The aliphatic diamine was protonated at a higher pH than the arylamine, which left the arylamine free for incorporation instead of the alkyl diamine. This reaction thus opened the possibility of switching between closed macrocyclic and open helicate topologies by changing the pH. An additional closed topology became accessible through the use of a diamine that incorporates two rigid phenylene spacer groups between a flexible chain and the imine-forming nitrogen atoms. The resulting catenate consists of a pair of topologically interlinked macrocycles. The presence of the phenylene groups appeared to dictate the topology of the final product, making the formation of a single macrocycle energetically disfavoured.

Structural, thermodynamic, and mesomorphic consequences of replacing nitrates with trifluoroacetate counteranions in ternary lanthanide complexes with hexacatenar tridentate ligands.

The promesogenic hexacatenar tridentate ligands L3(Cn) (I shape) and L4(Cn) (V shape) react with trivalent lanthanide trifluoroacetates, Ln((CF3CO2)3, to give either monometallic [Ln(Li(Cn))(CF3CO2)3] or trifluoroacetato-bridged bimetallic [Ln(Li(Cn))(CF3CO2)3]2 complexes in the solid state, as exemplified by the crystal structures of [Lu(L4(CO))(CF3CO2)3(H2O)], [Lu(L4(CO))(CF3CO2)3]2, and [La(L3(C4))(CF3CO2)3]2. Although the dimerization process is influenced by the competiting complexation of anions or solvent molecules, the coordination of CF3CO2- instead of NO3- to Ln(III) produces a significant lengthening of the Ln-N(ligand) bond distances. This translates into a considerable decrease of the affinity of the Li(C12) (i = 3, 4) ligands for Ln(CF3CO2)3 in solution, thus leading to significant dissociation of the [Ln(Li(C12))(CF3CO2)3] complexes at millimolar concentrations. The thermal properties of these complexes also suffer from their limited thermodynamic stability, and the thermotropic liquid crystalline phases produced at high temperatures reflect mixtures of different species. However, a hexagonal columnar organization characterizes the main component in the mesophases obtained with [Ln(L3(C12))(CF3CO2)3] at high temperature. A tentative interpretation of the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) profiles suggests that disklike dimers of [Ln(L3(C12))(CF3CO2)3]2 are packed along the columnar axes. For [Ln(L4(C12))(CF3CO2)3], SAXS profiles are compatible with a lamellar organization in the mesophases originating from the existence of rodlike dimers of [Ln(L4(C12))(CF3CO2)3]2 as the major component in the liquid-crystal state.

Towards the stereoselective synthesis of inherently chiral pseudorotaxanes.

Herein is reported an investigation towards the stereoselective synthesis of inherently chiral pseudorotaxanes. Chiral ammonium threads were readily prepared in five steps from racemic or enantiopure (M or P) salts of di-n-propyl-1,13-dimethoxyquinacridinium cation. Their self-assembly with DB24C8 or disymmetrically oriented DB24C8F6 rings formed pseudorotaxanes as shown by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy as well as MS measurements. A determination of the association constants (Ka) was afforded. The crucial role played by the ammonium counter-ion in the threading process was further demonstrated as salts of TRISPHAT (tris(tetrachlorobenzenediolato)phosphate(V)) anion were quite more effective than their PF6- analogues (x 7.3). A general lack of diastereoselectivity (de <or= 8%) was unfortunately observed.

Self-assembly and interconversion of tetranuclear copper(II) complexes.

The ligand 1,2-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)-1,2-ethanediol (H2bzimed, 1) and its N-methylated analogue (H2mbzimed, 2) form a variety of polynuclear complexes with copper(II), all of which contain a planar Cu2O2 lozenge as a central element and in which the bridging oxygen belongs to an alkoxo group of the ligand. Syntheses are reported for dinuclear [Cu2(Hmbzimed)2](ClO4)2 x 1.5H2O, Cu(2)2(2), and the tetranuclear species [Cu4(Hbzimed)4(ClO4)2](NO3)2 x 4H2O, Cu(4)1(4), [Cu4(Hmbzimed)2(mbzimed)Cl2](ClO4)2 x 2H2O x C2H5OH, Cu(4)2(3), and rac-[Cu4(H2bzimed)4(bzimed)(ClO4)2](ClO4)4 x 1.5H2O x 3.5C2H5OH, Cu(4)1(5). Crystal structures are reported for the tetranuclear species. Cu(4)1(4) shows a cubane structure, Cu(4)2(3) a stepped cubane structure, and rac-Cu(4)1(5) a novel structure in which one doubly deprotonated ligand lies between the two Cu2O2 units. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that all complexes show antiferromagnetic coupling in the solid state. Studies in solution (ESI-MS, CD, NMR) show that Cu(2)2(2) and Cu(4)2(3) persist in solution but that Cu(4)1(4) dissociates partially and rac-Cu(4)1(5) completely. The six coordination modes of the ligands are discussed together with the effect of the N-methylation on the ligand conformation.

Tuning the decay time of lanthanide-based near infrared luminescence from micro- to milliseconds through d-->f energy transfer in discrete heterobimetallic complexes.

Inert and optically active pseudo-octahedral Cr(III)N6 and Ru(II)N6 chromophores have been incorporated by self-assembly into heterobimetallic triple-stranded helicates HHH-[CrLnL3]6+ and HHH-[RuLnL3]5+. The crystal structures of [CrLnL(3)](CF(3)SO(3))(6) (Ln=Nd, Eu, Yb, Lu) and [RuLnL3](CF3SO3)5 (Ln=Eu, Lu) demonstrate that the helical structure can accommodate metal ions of different sizes, without sizeable change in the intermetallic MLn distances. These systems are ideally suited for unravelling the molecular factors affecting the intermetallic nd-->4f communication. Visible irradiation of the Cr(III)N6 and Ru(II)N6 chromophores in HHH-[MLnL3]5/6+ (Ln=Nd, Yb, Er; M=Cr, Ru) eventually produces lanthanide-based near infrared (NIR) emission, after directional energy migration within the complexes. Depending on the kinetic regime associated with each specific d-f pair, the NIR luminescence decay times can be tuned from micro- to milliseconds. The origin of this effect, together with its rational control for programming optical functions in discrete heterobimetallic entities, are discussed.

Helicates of chiragen-type ligands and their aptitude for chiral self-recognition.

Two (-)-5,6-pinene-bipyridine moieties connected by a para-xylylene bridge (so-called chiragen-type ligands), (-)-L1, undergo self-assembly upon reaction with equimolar amounts of CuI to form enantiopure circular hexanuclear P-helicates. If both enantiomers of L1 are used, mixtures of P and M hexanuclear helicates are exclusively obtained through a complete chiral recognition; that is, no mixing of the (+) and (-) ligands, respectively, occurs upon complexation. This was proven by a) NMR spectroscopy where identical spectra to those for complexes with the enantiomerically pure ligands were obtained and b) circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The reaction is completely changed by the use of the corresponding meso-L1. Instead of well-defined species, oligomeric mixtures are observed, a result demonstrating the crucial role played by ligand chirality in self-assembly processes. Structural variations on the chiral ligand L1, such as a meta-xylylene bridge instead of a para-xylylene one (in L4) or four pinene groups instead of two (in L5 and L6), favor nondiscrete coordination assembly.

Molecular control of macroscopic cubic, columnar, and lamellar organizations in luminescent lanthanide-containing thermotropic liquid crystals.

The connection of lipophilic gallic acid derivatives at the 5,5'- or 6,6'-positions of the rigid 2,6-bis(1-ethyl-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine core provides two pro-mesogenic tridentate ligands L10 and L12, whose molecular shapes, anisometries, and directional intermolecular pi-stacking can be tuned. X-ray diffraction data in the crystalline state, combined with solution 1H NMR measurements, show that complexation with trivalent lanthanides, Ln(III), produces the neutral hemi-disklike complexes [Ln(Li)(NO3)3] (i = 10, 12), which dimerize to give the rodlike bimetallic complexes [Ln2(Li)2(NO3)6] at lower temperature. The relevant thermodynamic parameters for the latter process depend on the nature of the ligand, the size of the metal ion, and the strength of the intermolecular interactions involved in the condensed phase. These three-dimensional models obtained for the complexes in the crystals and in solution are eventually confronted with small-angle XRD profiles recorded in the intermediate thermotropic liquid crystalline phase, in which the rigidity of the packed polyaromatic cores is maintained, while the alkyl chains are molten. According to the specific geometries and nuclearities of the molecular complexes, three types of mesophases (lamellar, columnar, and cubic) can be induced, which provides a direct correlation between the microscopic arrangements and the macroscopic ordering in lanthanide-containing metallomesogens.

Selection rules for helicate ligand component self-assembly: steric, pH, charge, and solvent effects.

The reaction between 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxaldehyde, copper(I), and certain primary amines was found to give quantitatively a dicopper double-helicate product (two of which were crystallographically characterized) by imine self-assembly around Cu(I) templates. The parameters of this reaction were investigated, and important roles were found to be played by (i) the steric bulk of the amine, (ii) the charge of the amine, (iii) the solvent used, and (iv) the pH of the solution. Water was found to allow the broadest range of structures to form, and ligand-component exchange reactions (involving the substitution of an aromatic for an aliphatic amine) were demonstrated to proceed readily in this solvent.
