The relationship between mitochondrial heterogeneity and gluconeogenesis in liver mitochondria of the rat, pigeon and guinea pig.

Isolated mitochondria of pigeon and guinea pig liver were subjected to zonal centrifugation. With pigeon liver mitochondria there was uniform distribution of pyruvate carboxylase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, malate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase and glutamate dehydrogenase activities. Guinea pig liver mitochondria demonstrated two pyruvate carboxylase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase maxima but only one maximum with aspartate aminotransferase, malate dehydrogenase and glutamate dehydrogenase. Mitochondrial enzyme levels in rat, pigeon and guinea pig indicate different roles of certain gluconeogenic enzymes in the transport of carbon and hydrogen in and out of mitochondria.

Effect of methylergonovine on puerperal prolactin secretion.

Serum prolactin concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay in 29 women, in the first 1 1/2 hours postpartum. Fourteen women received 0.2 mg methylergonovine maleate (Methergine) intramuscularly after the delivery of the placenta. Fifteen women who served as controls received only saline. The rise in serum prolactin concentration seen in the control women (266.4 ng/ml +/- 40.8 SE) was significantly greater than that seen in methylergonovine-treated patients (141.0 ng/ml +/- 29.0. SE).

Progesterone and estrogen secretion by puerperal human ovaries.

Plasma progesterone, estrone, and estradiol concentrations were determined in peripheral and ovarian vein samples in 9 women 20 to 30 minutes after delivery of the placenta during cesarean section. Progesterone concentrations in the ovarian vein draining the corpus luteum were significantly higher than the contralateral side or the peripheral concentration, confirming the activity of the puerperal corpus luteum. Estrone concentrations showed no significant difference between peripheral and ovarian vein samples, indicating little or no ovarian estrone secretion. The estradiol concentrations of the ovarian vein samples were significantly higher than peripheral levels. This indicates ovarian secretion of estradiol in the puerperium by areas other than the corpus luteum.

Maximal functions and h spaces defined by ergodic transformations.

Suppose an ergodic flow acts on a probability space enabling us to introduce the Ergodic Hilbert transform f of f in L(p)(), 1 <== p <== infinity. H(1) is the class of all functions of the form f + if in L(1)(). We show that H(1) can be characterized in terms of a class of maximal functions; moreover, the dual space of H(1) is identified with a space of functions of bounded mean oscillation defined in terms of the flow.
