Comparison of tensile strength of solder joints by infrared and conventional torch technique.

Fabrication of a fixed partial denture may require a soldering step. This study compared soldering by a conventional torch procedure with an infrared soldering technique. Comparisons were made for tensile strength, porosity, and time efficiency between the two methods. No significant difference was found in ultimate tensile strength between the two types of solder joints and the nonsoldered control samples. Random samples photographed with a scanning electron microscope revealed no difference in joint porosity between the two techniques. Torch soldering took consistently less time that infrared soldering.

Resilience among older women.

This qualitative study was designed to identify and describe characteristics of successfully adjusted older women. The participants reported a recent major loss and were considered successfully adjusted as evidenced by social involvement in a senior center, a mid level to high level of morale and self-report. Using a grounded theory approach, five underlying themes were identified: equanimity, self-reliance, existential aloneness, perseverance and meaningfulness. These themes are thought to constitute resilience. Lateral grounding of the concept resilience is accomplished by comparison with philosophical writings of Frankl, Bettelheim, Frank, May and von Witzleben. Resilience is important in late life as a component of successful psychosocial adjustment.

The high-turnover profile. Screening and selecting applicants for nurse's aide.

In summary, this study supports previous research and suggests that the high-turnover profile can be described by the following characteristics (the reader is reminded that these characteristics describe the sample in this study and cannot be readily applied to the population of all nurse's aides): Individuals who appeared likely to terminate employment in one year were less than 28 years of age, not married, and trained or educated beyond the job's requirements. Previous employment histories of individuals who left their jobs within one year indicated that they were more likely to have had less than 18 months in previous positions, and worked in two or more nursing homes within a three-year period. Nursing home management may find it helpful to refer to high-turnover characteristics when screening and selecting applicants for the position of nurse's aide. Through careful selection of employees, nursing homes can expect a reduced rate of turnover, which may, in turn, improve the quality of resident care.

Major stressors among elderly home care clients.

By understanding the stressors that elderly home care patients face when returning from the hospital, home healthcare nurses can help their clients toward a more satisfactory recovery and sustain better self care.
