[Acute nonbacterial bronchopneumopathies in the 1st years of life. Diagnostic strategies and clinico-epidemiological peculiarities].

The authors summarise diagnostic strategies an clinical epidemiologic peculiarities of non-bacterial bronchopneumopathies in children. The role of classic viral agents (virus influenzal A-B, virus parainfluenza 2-3, RVS) is stressed without neglecting the role of other etiologic agents such as Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Pneumocystis carinii. The Authors point out the necessity of direct investigation (viral cultures, direct investigation in IF and ELISA, investigation with DNA probe use, etc.) and indirect serologic investigation to obtain the greatest possible accuracy an early diagnosis.

Heavy metals: sources and environmental presence.

The Istituto Superiore di Sanità has for many years been involved in the problem of environmental pollution caused by heavy metals. A brief review of the sources of this pollution is first presented which also includes the presence in nature of some heavy metals which are among the most dangerous. Data gathered by the authors is then presented from sampling of the emissions of urban solid waste (USW) incinerators and from environmental monitoring programs in different areas in Italy according to four categories: urban, industrial, rural and mixed.

[Clinical trial in a child population with bronchial asthma].

A review of 104 children affected with respiratory tract allergies and or rhinoconjunctivitis in hyposensitizing therapy against gramineae pollens or moulds or house dust or Mix dermatophagoides is presented. Clinical evaluations were carried out in order to evaluate the clinical improvement after 1 year and after 4 years therapy (TIS). The best results were detected after 4 years obviously and in some allergic diseases more improvement were found from the authors. The most important results were obtained in bronchial asthma; the worse benefits were detected in allergic conjunctivitis.

[Methods to monitor TCDD presence in atmospheric particulate in the Seveso area (author's transl)].

Analytical monitoring of atmospheric dust in the seveso area (Milan, Italy) was carried out in order to evaluate the magnitude of TCDD transmigration via air streams. Two sampling techniques were utilized: i) dust-jars and ii) high-volume air samplers. Experimental evidences have shown that dust-jars and high-volume samplers are suitable to monitoring of dust-borne TCDD: however, while the former are quite reliable and easy to use, the latter can only be employed provided the carrier dust complies with some specific requirements. Dust contamination above sensitivity threshold was occasionally detected when specimens were collected near to mainly contaminated area ("A" area): however, only the atmospheric dust gathered in zone A1 was consistently found to contain TCDD.

[Cadmium as an air pollutant].

Daily concentrations of airborne cadmium has been determined for a year in three italian urban areas presenting different characteristics. Results obtained are in the following ranges: Rome, 0,0017--0,0194 micrograms/m3; Venice, 0,0012--0,2234 micrograms/m3 and Marghera, 0,0037--0,704 micrograms/m3. Some data for urban inciniretors emissions are also presented. Origin, effects and legislation concerning airborne cadmium are briefly discussed.

[Determination of free crystalline silica in atmospheric dust].

The method for the determination of free crystalline silica (quarts), as previously described by two of the authors, has been employed on atmosphere dust of unconfined spaces. The matrix effect of atmospheric dust has been investigated in winter and in summer. The limits in the use of this method have been studied considering also what stated by law code n. 615. The results obtained on the outdoor atmospheric dust, samples from industrial as well as suburban areas, are reported. The results are evaluated in relation to the metereological records.
