Two cases of death associated with the use of lithium carbonate are described. The first one concerns a 39-year-old man who was found suddenly dead on his hospital bed. Toxicologic analysis revealed "therapeutic" levels of lithium, nitrazepam, flurazepam, and phenobarbital. The second case involves a 54-year-old woman initially treated for acute cardiac failure and hypertension, who was finally recognized as a case of lithium intoxication; she died of cardiac arrest without evident cardiac lesions and without lithium ions in serum and urine. The medicolegal aspects of both cases are discussed, with reference to the problems of diagnosis, clinical and toxicological correlations, and the medical responsibility.
A case of sudden and unexpected death due to idiopathic cardiomyopathy of hypertrophic type in a 50-year-old man is reported. The heart showed on gross observation a very marked hypertrophy (1100 g); microscopically, muscle fibers were different in size and shape, with hypertrophy of nuclei, associated with a moderate increase of connective tissue.

Adult mice were actively immunized with delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol-bovine serum albumin (delta 9-THC-BSA) conjugate. Control animals were immunized with BSA alone. While the administration of pentobarbital and delta 9-THC to control animals resulted in the well known prolongation of the barbiturate sleeping time, in mice immunized with delta 9-THC-BSA conjugate this effect was almost completely neutralized.
An immune serum to cannabinoids was produced in rabbits. It was tested in vitro by immunoprecipitation, hemagglutination and hemagglutination-inhibition tests. In vivo, when passively transferred into mice, it prevented the effect of delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol on the barbiturate sleeping time.
A case of lethal orphenadrine intoxication is reported. Included are the anatomical and toxicological findings. Most conspicuous histologically was the centrilobular necrosis of the liver.

Delta 9-THC at the dose of 1 mg/kg/die was administered subcutaneously in growing rats, from the second to the 30th day of life. A statistically significant myeloid hyperplasia was demonstrated, which persisted up to 4 months after the end of the treatment, together with significant blood granulocytosis.
