Correlative light and immunohistological study of the HCG-like antigen in the squamous cell carcinoma of the human uterine cervix.

Immunoperoxidase reactions with the use of anti-HCG antibody was applied to formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded sections of 52 squamous cell carcinomas of human uterine cervix. These include 19 cases of carcinoma in situ, 5 microinvasive and 28 invasive squamous cell carcinomas. We found that the HCG-like antigen was present in a few cells of cancer cell nests and didn't distribute as found on the syncytiotrophoblastic cells. We couldn't correlate the presence or absence of HCG-like antigen to histological degrees of cancer cell differentiation and lymphocyte infiltrations. This antigen seemed to occur in lymphatic type more than in cirrhotic type, although no statistical significant correlation could be found. These results were discussed in the association of immunological meaning of HCG.

The ability of amine production by argyrophil cell adenocarcinoma of the endometrium.

The ability of amine production of argyrophil cell adenocarcinoma of the endometrium was studied by wet-histofluorescence method. The intense green and yellow fluorescence was detected for the first time in the cytoplasm of a few tumor cells by injecting amine precursor (L-Dopa) 3mg intraperitoneally to nude mice, who were transplanted serially with argyrophil cell adenocarcinoma of the endometrium. Similar fluorescence was also located in a few epithelial cells of the small intestine prepared from the same nude mice. These findings strongly suggested that these fluorescent products were amines. In order to specify the sorts of amines, the microspectrophotometric analyses are now in progress.

Correlative light and immunohistological study of the basement membrane of the human squamous cervical carcinoma.

Immunofluorescent reaction with the use of bullous pemphigoid patients' sera including antibodies to the basement membrane, was applied to the frozen sections of 31 cervical carcinomas. These include 3 in situ carcinomas, 1 microinvasion, and 27 invasive squamous cell carcinomas. We found the essentially normal immunofluorescent basement membrane in all cases of in situ carcinomas and in 7 cases of invasive carcinomas, and poorly formed or absent basement membrane in the remaining 20 cases. We couldn't correlate the presence or absence of basement membrane to any histological characteristics, i.e., CPL classification, histological degree of cancer cell differentiation, lymphocyte infiltration, lymph node metastasis and mucin production in cancer cells. The basement membranes shown by PAS staining were not compatible with immunofluorescent one. This means that the diagnosis of the destruction of basement membranes may not be clear by PAS staining. However, we do not know the conventional methods to stain the basement membrane, except for the immunofluorescent technic.

Immunohistological demonstration of calcitonin in endometrial carcinomas with and without argyrophil cells.

Sixteen endometrial carcinomas were studied by an immunoperoxidase method with anti-human calcitonin, 8 with and 8 without argyrophil cells. Calcitonin was demonstrated in 7 with and 2 without argyrophil cells. Calcitonin production was not associated with any specific histology of the endometrial carcinomas. Regardless of the existence of argyrophil cells, calcitonin was located in the apical portion or in the entire cytoplasm of the glandular tumor cells in the well differentiated adenocarcinomas. In a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and the adenosquamous carcinomas, it was found in many immature and squamous tumor cells as well as in some glandular tumor cells. The comparative studies between calcitonin and argyrophil granules in the endometrial carcinomas with argyrophil cells revealed that calcitonin was located in many tumor cells other than argyrophil cells. The extreme examples were 2 calcitonin-producing tumors without argyrophil cells. Calcitonin production of the endometrial carcinomas is a novel finding, but the biological significance of argyrophil cells remains to be further investigated.

[A clinicopathologic study of ovarian tumors (author's transl)].

A clinicopathologic study was undertaken on 504 ovarian tumors which were treated in Osaka University Hospital during the past 18 years period. Also, marker substances were examined with some tumors. Most of the ovarian tumors were benign and cystic; 191 dermoid cysts, 106 serous cystadenomas, and 68 mucinous cystadenomas. Among the intermediate and malignant tumor groups, common epithelial tumors were the commonest and seen in older ages. Androblastomas, a granulosa cell tumor arising in dermoid cyst, and a possible juvenile granulosa cell tumor were rarely seen. Dysgerminomas and embryonal carcinomas were fairly popular in young ages. Malignant changes of dermoid cyst were rare and in older ages; the include an insular carcinoid, a strumal carcinoid, squamous cell carcinomas, an adenocarcinoma, and a malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Ovarian tumors in pregnancy were mostly dermoid cyst and fibroma. Bilaterality was more frequent in malignant tumors (20%) than others. The serum levels of marker substances have recently been utilized for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up studies. Immunohistology was useful for the classification of some tumors. Radical operation and chemotherapy were chosen for the treatment of malignant ovarian tumors except some low grade malignancies, but the prognoses were generally poor.

A case of adeno-squamous cell carcinoma of the vagina.

A 44 year-old woman with an adeno-squamous cell carcinoma of the vagina was presented. The patient didn't have a history of the intrauterine exposure to DES. This case might be a first published case report in the Japanese literature. The histogenesis of adeno-carcinoma component is discussed.

[Vaginal smears of malignant ovarian tumors: comparison with cervical canal, aspirate uterine corpus, ascites, imprint smears and cytomorphology of histological specimens (author's transl)].

Vaginal smears of 21 patients with malignant ovarian tumors were examined. In 5 cases malignant cells were present: 1 mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, 2 poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas, 1 clear cell carcinoma, and 1 adenoid squamous cell carcinoma arising in a dermoid cyst. Cytomorphology of tumor cells in tissue specimens and imprint, ascites, aspirate uterine corpus, cervical canal and vaginal smears were examined. The ovarian malignant cells of the vaginal smears were grouped, round or oval with eccentric round or oval nuclei having a finely granular chromatin pattern regularly distributed, and with vesicular or vacuolated cytoplasm. Tumor diathesis appeared in 1 of 5 cases. Two post-menopausal patients showed an increase of superficial cells in the maturation index. In the comparison of malignant cells taken from different locations, vaginal tumor cells were similar to those in ascites. Since ascites smears were reported to be useful for the diagnosis of some kinds of ovarian tumors, it was expected that vaginal smears might also have this potentiality.

Juvenile granulosa cell tumor of the ovary.

Juvenile granulosa cell tumor of the left ovary occurring in a 21-year-old unmarried women was reported. This is a variety of granulosa cell tumor that is observed almost always in children and has a distinctive appearance. Histological patterns characteristic of this tumor are a relatively large follicles with thick walls and cavities, a disorderly mixture of granulosa and theca cells, a marked luteinization with lipid content, and a more malignant appearance with hyperchromatic and immature nuclei than in the adult forms. The prognosis, however, is said to be better than the latter.

A follicular adenoma arising from the thyroid tissue of a benign cystic teratoma during pregnancy--lightmicroscopical, ultrastructural and endocrinological studies.

A rare case of follicular adenoma arising from the thyroid tissue of a benign cystic teratoma of the left ovary was described in a 28-year-old, 13 weeks pregnant woman. Histologically, the tumor showed pleomorphic adenomatous patterns; embryonal type, fetal type, simple type and oxyphil type. The final diagnosis of follicular adenoma was established by ultrastructural, immunohistological and endocrinological studies. The patient was successfully operated, delivered of a normal full term male infant and is now under a follow-up study.
