Fetal brain implants improve maze performance in hippocampal-lesioned rats.

Hippocampal tissue from day 16 fetal rats was implanted into the damaged hippocampal formation of adults. Significant recovery of the lesion-induced deficit in spatial maze performance was observed, particularly in those animals which showed integration of the implanted fetal tissue with the host hippocampal formation. A two-stage procedure in which 2 weeks or more elapsed between the initial lesion and the implantation resulted in more successful tissue integration and better behavioral recovery.

Cyanoacrylate ester adhesive: a versatile tool in experimental surgery.

Cyanoacrylate ester adhesive is useful in experimental surgery in rodents and other animals for closing skin and muscle incisions, securing cannulae in place, and securing dental acrylic to bone. Both laboratories reporting here found independently that the technique used in applying cyanoacrylate for wound closures is important. Very small droplets of adhesive must be applied. A device for this purpose is described.

In utero taste/odor aversion conditioning in the rat.

Rat fetuses exposed to a taste-odor stimulus and an aversive stimulus in utero showed an aversion to the taste/odor stimulus when tested 16 days postnatally. Fetuses which received various control treatments in utero did not show an aversion. These data show that rat fetuses at 20 days of gestation are capable of associative learning which can be demonstrated more than two weeks postnatally.

Ketamine/xylazine anesthesia in the pregnant rat.

Pregnant albino rats were anesthetized with a combination of ketamine and xylazine. A minimal effective dosage of 90 mg/kg for ketamine and 10 mg/kg for xylazine provided satisfactory anesthesia in 92% of the subjects, without adverse effects on gestation or the fetuses.

A versatile primate cage for a multiple use facility.

A mobile-transport-squeeze cage for primates was constructed. The cage contained a clear plastic guillotine door, squeeze apparatus, ventilation holes and locking casters. The squeeze apparatus could be operated by one person.

Met-enkephalin effects on associations formed in utero.

Rat fetuses exposed to an odor stimulus and an aversive stimulus in utero showed an aversion to the odor when tested 16 days postnatally. Fetuses that also received 80 micrograms/kg Met-enkephalin showed a greater aversion to the odor stimulus than those subjects that did not receive the peptide. The difference between these groups was marginally significant. Control subjects did not show an aversion. But, subjects exposed to the odor and Met-enkephalin without the aversive stimulus, when tested, showed a significant preference for the odor over other control groups. These data show that associative learning in rat fetuses at 20 days of gestation may be enhanced by administration of Met-enkephalin.
