[The Göttinger minipig as a laboratory animal. 5. Communication: cardiac output, its regional distribution and organ blood flow (author's transl)].

In 16 juvenile minipigs weighing 3.08 kg an average cardiac output of 23 ml/100 g body weight was measured with the dye-dilution method. The microsphere technique was used to assess distribution of cardiac output and organ blood flow. In 12 adult minipigs with a mean body weight of 21.5 kg the cardiac output of 14 ml/100 g body weight was measured with an electromagnetic flowmeter. The values of total systemic and organic blood flow correlated well with those of man and partly with those of other laboratory animals.

Adolescent

[Erroneous diagnoses in the retrograde demonstration of the biliary and pancreatic ducts. Results of a prospective study involving 197 examinations (author's transl)].

The results of endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography were evaluated in a prospective study of 126 patients in respect of diagnostic accuracy, as compared with surgery and clinical follow-up. The diagnosis was incorrect in 11 patients; in seven it failed to differentiate between acute and chronic pancreatitis. The discrepancies in the other four patients are described in detail, particularly with reference to prepapillary filling defects. The indications, advantages and limitations of ERCP are discussed.

Acute Disease

[Genetics and society].

With the use of mathematical models it was attempted to calculate the probability of eugenic or dysgenic effects as a consequence of medical treatment and of procedures used in human genetics. 1. Modern medicine will cause mainly an increase in multifactorial malformations and diseases. But the resulting burden for the general public most probably will be considerably smaller compared to to-day expenses for the care of those affected with chronic inherited diseases. 2. For many families concerned prenatal diagnosis is the only reasonable approach to obtain healthy children of their own. In order to reduce substantially the number of affected individuals prenatal diagnosis would have to be applied as a prospective mass screening which in many cases would be too demanding.

Chromosome Aberrations

[Infusion treatment in severe dehydration (infantile toxicosis)].

Severe dehydration in infants is a common life threatening condition. The therapy of different forms of dehydration has been described. Many practical suggestions for diagnostic procedures have been added. Clinical and pathophysiological peculiarities typical of the treatment of severe infantile dehydration have been stressed.
