Histopathology of oral lesions of discoid lupus erythematosus. A review of 25 cases.

In a study of 25 oral biopsy specimens of lesions of chronic discoid lupus erythematosus, a characteristic and diagnostic histopathological pattern was confirmed, which consisted of parakeratosis, hydropic degeneration of stratum germinativum, collagen degeneration and a lymphocytic infiltration in a perivascular orientation. It is suggested that more oral biopsies be used in the diagnosis of discoid lupus erythematosus because of the ease of oral mucosal biopsy technique and the absence of scarring and discomfort from oral biopsy lesions.

A polymethacrylate-silica composite material for dental implants.

A study has been carried out on the structure and surface texture of a new dental implant material composed of silica microspheres (3 or 5 wt%) and poly(methyl methacrylate). A recently developed composite material composed of vitreous carbon microballoons and poly(methyl methacrylate) has proven highly successful in clinical use, but the black color presents aesthetic problems at the gingival margin. The new material was developed in order to reproduce the many desirable qualities of the vitreous carbon-polymethacrylate composite, while omitting the black color. Square wafers (10 mm X 10 mm X1 mm) were studied, with the surface sandblasted in half of the specimens. Light microscopy revealed an even spacing of spherical configurations throughout the material. Scanning electron microscope studies revealed a finely porous surface with many large craters in the sandblasted specimens.

Levamisole and hamster pouch carcinogenesis.

Seventy-five male and female Syrian hamsters (Cricetus auratus), 10 months of age, were studied for the effects of systemically administered levamisole upon the process of chemical carcinogenesis of buccal pouch mucosa. In twenty-five animals (Group II) the left buccal pouch was painted three times weekly with a 0.5 per cent solution of 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene (DMBA) in heavy mineral oil. After each topical application of carcinogen to the buccal pouch, animals in Group II received approximately 0.7 mg. of levamisole hydrochloride orally by means of a pipette. In another twenty-five animals (Group I) the left buccal pouch was painted three times weekly with DMBA, but they were not given levamisole. The twenty-five animals in Group III served as untreated controls. In those animals which received levamisole chemical carcinogenesis of the buccal pouch was retarded. Fewer tumors developed, and they were of smaller size.

A vitreous carbon-polymethacrylate composite for dental implants.

A STUDY HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE STRUCTURE AND SURFACE TEXTure of a new dental implant material composed of vitreous carbon balloons (3 wt % or 6 wt %) and poly(methyl methacrylate). Tooth replica implants using this material had been successfully placed in baboons, and histologic study revealed normal alveolar bone and a peri-implant membrane with the connective tissue fibers oriented in a horizontal direction. Square wafers (10 mm X 10 mm X 1 mm) were studied, with the surface sandblasted in one-half of the specimens. Light microscopy revealed that in the 3% carbon specimens, the vitreous carbon micro-balloons were evenly spaced and often appeared to be fragmented within their spaces. S.E.M. studies revealed a finely porous surface with numerous large craters. Microballoons were often seen within the craters in the nonsandblasted specimens.

A histologic and electronic evaluation of electrosurgical currents: nonfiltered full-wave modulated vs. filtered current.

A controlled system for examining the tissue alteration and healing of electrosurgically produced wounds was established. Standardization of width, depth, stroke, amperage, average voltage, and wave form was achieved. A histologic comparison of tissue alteration and healing produced by a conventional blade and two electrosurgical currents was carried out. The need for standarization of instrumentation and clinical procedures is discussed.

The effects of cosmic particle radiation on pocket mice aboard Apollo XVII: appendix II. Evaluation of oral, dental, and skeletal tissues.

A sparse neutrophilic leukocytic infiltrate was found in the gingival sulcus, both in the flight and the control animals, while no changes were observed in the palate. Mitoses in gingival and palatal tissues were in approximately equal numbers in all animal groups. The tongues of flight mice and controls contained areas characterized by vascular dilatation, separation of muscle bundles, and regressive and degenerative changes in muscle fibers. Mucous glands in the posterior part of the tongue of flight and control animals exhibited acinar distension. Also examined were the vertebral column; femur, knee joint, tibia and fibula of the right hindlimb; and the tracheal cartilages. No evidence of cosmic ray particle effects was found in any of these tissues.
