Since January 1985 13 female patients with urinary incontinence induced by pure stress have been subjected to perineal functional rehabilitation at the S. Giovanni Battista Hospital Functional Rehabilitation Service and Turin Health Service Unit 23 in collaboration with the hospital's Urology Division. The results are encouraging and suggest that this treatment may be a valid alternative to surgery.
From our data urinary tuberculosis, clearly reduced as regards past decennia, now results constant in annual number of cases. The reduced frequency sometimes requires some problems of differential diagnosis. After a few considerations about anatomo-pathologic aspects, we examine the diagnostic procedures starting from that urinary tuberculosis has not pathognomic clinical signs, except identification of M. tuberculosis in urine. The medical treatment consists in administering three drugs (rifampin, isoniazid, ethambutol) for 3 months and then two drugs for 6-9 months, on the ground of clinical course. Surgical treatment can be divided in destroying and preserving surgery. At last, endoscopic treatment takes aim at dilating ureteral stenoses.
141 patients with prostatic cancer, checked by biopsy, have been treated since 1975 till 1980 with cryotherapy and hormonotherapy. They have been compared with 60 patients who have received only hormones. There is a statistical difference in favour of the patients treated with cryotherapy, particularly in T3 and T4 stage. The best survival is plain especially in the first and third year. This improvement might depend on an immunologycal answer.
Cryotherapy was applied by us as a palliative in 91 cases of carcinoma of the prostate. 1. Disobstruction was achieved in 87% of patients. 2. Results proved stable over time. 3. Operating mortality, survival curve, number of deaths, etc. was not statistically different in patients treated with cryotherapy compared with patients undergoing other treatments. 4. Precutions are required to combat infection of cryotherapy patients in the first few weeks. We feel authorized to pursue cryotherapy in the future exploiting all its immunologic possibilities.
