[Subclavian vein catheterization in traumatic surgery (author's transl)A1].

The new Cavafix system was employed for puncture and catheterization of the subclavian vein in 100 casuality patients undergoing surgical intervention. Excellent results were achieved not only in emergency cases with severe shock and hypovolaemia, but also in hospitalized patients requiring long-term infusion therapy. This system proved easy to handle even by doctors inexperienced in the use of such techniques and, hence, the incidence of complications was within the range reported in the literature.

[Comparative cinematographic studies of the mandibular movements normal subjects and patients with dysgnatias].

Mandibular movements of test persons with eugnathic and dysgnathic dentitions were compared with each other by kinematographic tests and evaluation of single photographs. No essential differences in coarse movements are discernible. Neither form nor extent of the masticatory movements are significantly influenced by any dysgnathia or the type of food chewed. The testing method applied does not furnish any information on movements in the occlusion phase.

[Comparative study of the most common prosthetic aids].

The two most often used attachments and anchors were each submitted to permanent load in an alternating bending machine. Removing force, removing performance and mobility in a vertical direction were measured after permanent load and compared with each other. All compound elements showed signs of wear and tear. The removing force decreased by approximately 25%, in Bona anchors by 60%, the removing performance was reduced by 20% on the average, but by 75% in Bona anchors.

[Influence of nitroglycerin on hemodynamics, wall tension and oxygen consumption of the left ventricle].

The effects of nitroglycerin on left ventricular hemodynamics were determined in ten patients from biplane cineventriculograms and simultaneous pressure measurements. Before and after nitroglycerin (1.6 mg sublingually) the following parameters were measured: Systolic (PLV) and enddiastolic pressure (PLVED), enddiastolic (EDV) und endsystolic volume (ESV), cardiac output (SV), ejection fraction (EF) and ejection rate (ER), ejection time (tej), heart rate (HR), dp/dtmax, dp/dtmax Pi-Ped, maximal systolic wall stress (sigmamax), integrated systolic wall stress (sigma), outflow resistance (Rsys) and ventricular compliance (a). Nitroglycerin leads to a reduction of both, pre- and afterload, with a significant fall of PLV (10.8%), PLVED (21.8%), EDV (9.1%) ESV (13.3%) AND Rsys (14.4%). The changes of ventricular pressure and geometry result in a diminution of left ventricular wall stress (sigmamax- 11.8%, sigma - 26.4%), representing a decrease of calculated total oxygen-consumption of 11.5%. In six patients with reduced left ventricular diastolic compliance nitroglycerin leads to a remarkable increase of the compliance. This is probably due to the reversal of a latent ischemia by the decreased myocardial oxygen-consumption.

Size and distribution of SV 40 DNA Sequences covalently linked with the DNA of permissive mammalian cells.

CV-1 cells productively infected with SV 40 contain viral DNA which is covalently linked with the host cell DNA. These linear duplex viral-host DNA molecules are replicated during the infectious cycle. They can be selectively isolated and purified by two successive cycles of DNA-DNA hybridization and elution steps using first CV-1 cell and then SV 40-DNA immobilized on filters. In an attempt to clarify the nature of the host DNA sequences neighbouring the viral DNA it was found that reiterated host DNA must be within the range of 800 bases from the viral sequences. Reassociation kinetics and treatment of the reassociated viral-host DNA sequences with single strand-specific S1 nuclease have shown that unique host DNA sequences are always present in close neighbourhood of the viral DNA. Most of the SV 40 DNA sequences are probably intergrated as fragments of subgenomic length.

[Evaluation and wearing habits of complete dentures--results from a patient questionnaire].

In a questionnaire answered by 578 patients with new total dentures the personal attitude of the patient to his dental replacement was tested. Ninety per cent of the patients considered their dentures to be good or satisfactory, while 10 per cent were not satisfied. In addition, findings regarding the length of time for and manner in which dentures are being worn as well as denture care and expectations concerning prosthetical treatment are reported.
