We have studied the prevalence of IgG antibodies to H. pylori in gastroenterology personnel, patients and healthy blood donors to determinate if there is a presumable high risk of infection among the first group, frequently at risk of exposure to gastrointestinal secretions. The positive percentage of sera in the gastroenterology personnel was 30.4% and in the healthy control group (mean age 35.8 years) was 38.5% (p = 0.620). In the patient group, the rate of positive results was 90% and in their control group (mean age 58 years) was 78.1% (p = 0.269). However, the differences were statistically significant when groups of different ages were compared (p less than 0.001). The results obtained suggest that the variations in the antibodies levels are age related and do not confirm the presumably increased risk among the gastroenterology personnel.

We investigated the prevalence of the various genotypes of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in 281 patients evaluated between March, 2000 and March, 2002 in the health area of Elche. Of these patients, 55 were coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The genotype was related to viral load and the co-existence of HIV infection. Likewise, the relationship between these parameters and the presence of the HCV core antigen was established. The results indicate that genotype 1b was the most prevalent (38.4%) followed by genotype 3a (23.1%). Patients coinfected with HIV presented fewer infections due to group 1 genotypes (p < 0.05).Patients with HIV presented a greater viral load in all the genotypes, with genotype 3 presenting a high viral load. Detection of the HCV core antigen showed a close correlation with viral load determinations. Although not yet sufficiently assessed, determination of the HCV core antigen constitutes a simple technique that could eventually contribute to improving the management of patients with chronic HCV hepatitis.
We studied the in vitro development of resistance to ciprofloxacin, trovafloxacin and moxifloxacin in 5 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae resistant to penicillin. We detected the great ease of in vitro development of resistance in the case of ciprofloxacin and the much reduced capacity of moxifloxacin to generate resistance (only 1 strain). Trovafloxacin generated resistance, but more slowly than ciprofloxacin. We consider that study of the capacity to generate resistance should be one of the points to consider when deciding on their large-scale use in respiratory infections, but comparative studies between in vitro and in vivo models should be carried out so as to determine the clinical repercussion of these phenomena.

The incidence of Streptococcus agalactiae (SA) bacteremia in adults has increased in recent years, particularly in patients with severe underlying diseases. However SA is still an unusual pathogen in adults. We report 6 cases of SA bacteremia in adults, seen during 18 months. The microorganism was only isolated from the blood in 3 cases, and from blood and other locations in the remaining three cases. The age of the patients ranged from 35 to 70 years. Both sex were affected in the same proportion. In all cases except in one there was a previous underlying disease.
