Experimental defibrination and bothropase: a study on the fibrinolytic mechanism in vivo.

Fibrinogen was depleted in dogs injected with a single dose of bothropase even if pretreatment followed by a continuous infusion of antifibrinolytic drugs was performed during defibrination. The activation of the fibrinolytic system as a secondary effect of the defibrination syndrome induced by bothropase injection was blocked completely by aprotinin (Trasylol) but not by EACA. Plasmin activity in spite of the inhibition of plasminogen activator suggests that, either an excess of activator is released in circulation or a plasmin-antiplasmin complex is dissociated by the circulating fibrin, according to the hypothesis of Ambrus and Markus [1], and Back et al. [4] for the mechanism of fibrinolysis in vivo. An experimental model is suggested for the study of the fibrinolytic mechanism in vivo, by the association of defibrinating agents, antivenom and antifibrinolytic drugs.

Fibrinogenolytic substance (hementerin) of Brazilian blood-sucking leeches (Haementeria lutzi Pinto 1920).

The fibrinogenolytic activity of the salivary gland extract from the Brazilian blood-sucking leech Haementeria lutzi Pinto 1920 is characterized. The substance, named here hementerin, is stable and active at very low protein concentration, does not exhibit direct proteolytic activity on casein, fibrinogen, or fibrin, and is able to activate the human plasma fibrinolytic system in the presence of a serum cofactor and/or calcium. This indirect activation mechanism distinguishes hementerin from hirudin and shows a similarity with streptokinase. The effect on blood coagulation tests is reported.

[Hematological studies on cows pasturing on Brachiaria radicans napper in winter time (author's transl)].

A group of six adult cows Holstein-Frision was left grazing on a pasture formed exclusively with Brachiaria radicans Napper. This investigation was was undertaken during the rather dry winter with the graminea showing a low nitrat content. The animals failed to present any of the typical simptoms of intoxication and the weekly clinical and hematologycal examinations detected a hyperchromic macrocytic anaemia eventually jointed to anisocytosis and basophylic stippling in the red cells. The anaemia was controlled by removing the animals from the pasture.

Behavioral analysis of Drosophila mutants displaying abnormal male courtship.

We describe six recessive autosomal male sterile mutations in Drosophila, generated by mobilization of single P-elements, exhibiting abnormal male courtship behavior. Detailed analysis of courtship behavior elicited by virgin wild type females indicated that five of the six mutants are affected in the early steps of courtship. The sixth mutant is blocked at the step of attempted copulation which occurs later in the courtship sequence. All of the mutants have normal olfactory responses and normal locomotor activity. No defect in the visual modality has been observed for the five mutants affected in the initiation of courtship. The mutant blocked at attempted copulation lacks the 'on' and 'off' transients, but this appears to be due to genetic background rather than the mutation itself. Abnormal spermatogenesis was observed in five of the mutants. Spermatogenic defects vary and include lesions in the proliferation of the germline, in meiosis, and in the differentiation and maturation of the spermatids into motile sperm.

[Hematological effects produced on horses and sheeps pasturing upon Brachiaria radicans Napper (Tanner grass) in winter time (author's transl)].

Hematological studies were developed on two mares and twelve adults castrate sheeps of "Ideal" breed. The animals had been on a pasture formed with Brachiaria radicans Napper for one and two months respectively. This experiment was developed in winter time, so the leaves of the graminea had a yellow-green color. Clinical and hematological observations were made weekly. The typical symptoms of intoxication failed to present as observed in the former investigation when the plant was green (3). The hematological exames showed only for ovines a slight anemia, it was also characterized as being macrocytic and hypochromic. Some red blood cells with basophillic stippling and the occurrence of anisocytosis was observed in the blood of anemic animals, but no methemoglobin and Heinz bodies were found. The Brachiaria radicans Napper, had a low level of nitrate (2) therefore the animal poisoning must be attributed to another plant component, not nitrate as admited in the first hematological study (12).
