Treatment of fractures of the lower limbs with functional braces.

Closed treatment of fractures has recently used the method of functional braces. If well applied, these clear many patients with fractures from indication for surgery. The results reported for 118 cases show the utility and practicability of this method, especially in leg fractures and fractures of the femur with more than two fragments.

[Treatment of gastric cancer in the aged].

The A. suggest a modification of Stojanovick primary technique in the treatment of gastric cancer in the elderly. They reviewed pathology of gastric resected patients with exclusion of duodenal transit and they foretell such a technique because of a quicker performance, the scantiness of post-operative complication and, at the end, the complete lack of malabsorption syndromes which are so frequent in gastric resected patients.

[Uterine reactivity of alloxan-diabetic rats to oxytocin (author's transl)].

The author studied the uterine reactivity of alloxan-diabetic rats to oxytocin. Using the Magnus method with Ringer-Locke nutrient solution (modified by Garcia de Jalon) low in calcium and varying the bath temperature from 30 degrees C to 36 degrees C, modifications of the organ were observed. The dose-effect relationship was only practicable in uterus of normal rats at 30 degrees C. When the bath temperature reached 35 degrees C, it was only possible to evaluate the uterine reactivity of alloxan rats by fixed periods of rhythmical contractions, that were graphically represented. This modification in the experiment resulted from the absence of reactivity of the alloxanic rat organ at 30 degrees C. Besides describing the methodology applied, the author suggests a hypothesis about the role of Ca++ on the variation of uterine reactivity. A previous administration of diethylstilbestrol (estrogenic hormone) in alloxanic rats, not treated with insulin, was followed by recovery of uterine reactivity, reinforcing the hypothesis of the mobilization of Ca++ in discompensated alloxan-diabetic rats as a factor of variations on the sensibility of the tissues.

Surgical treatment of congenital radial clubhand.

In choosing the surgical method of correction of radial clubhand, one must take into consideration the age of the patient, the anatomical, radiographic and pathological alterations, and lastly the function of the homolateral elbow. Angiographic studies of the malformation have proved of value in revealing the possible coexistence of a normal vascular bed with hypogenesis of the radius. The esthetic and functional results obtained with two different surgical techniques, and followed up over the years, are reported in a fifteen year old boy and an eight year old girl.
