In vitro, accumulation of metanephrine is described in renal cortex of the rat (tissue/medium ratio greater than 5). This accumulation is saturable and energy dependent.

Hypertension during pregnancy and its complications are the most important cause of maternal and foetal death and morbidity. The chronic primary hypertension can be differentiated from the dysgravidia by anamnestic, biological, clinical and technical investigations. However the diagnosis remains difficult and the renal needle biopsy can help to ascertain it. The pathogenesis of dysgravidia is still obscure: the placental ischemia leads to a slow disseminated intravascular coagulation state with renal injury, while a vascular hyperreactivity leads to an increase of the resistance, a relative hypovolemia and lowering of cardiac output. The treatment and remote prognosis of the hypertensive disease associated with the pregnancy are summarized. The antihypertensive drugs improve the maternal prognosis while jeopardize the foetal outcome.

Plasma lipids and lipoproteins were studied in a group of chronic uraemia patients some of whom were maintained by regular haemodialysis. Compared with healthy individuals, there was a significant increase in plasma triglycerides and in the prebeta-1- and prebeta-2-lipoprotein plasma concentrations. There was no difference between dialyzed and undialyzed patients. Carbohydrate intake was normal, basal plasma insulin and free fatty acid levels were within the normal range. There was no correlation between plasma triglyceride levels and the degree of hypoalbuminaemia, the latter being marked in 30% of the patient. Basal plasma glucagon levels were very high in nearly all dialyzed patients and post-heparin lipoprotein-lipase activity was very low in dialyzed patients. In our experience, regular haemodialysis for 32 weeks did not improve hypertriglyceridaemia.
1. A first sample of a cross-section of the Belgian population was studied. 2. The presence of hypertension or borderline hypertension was established on the basis of two examinations at 1-3 weeks intervals, during which the blood pressure was measured four times after 10 min rest. 3. The prevalence of both hypertension and borderline hypertension increased with age in the two sexes and, independently of age, with the relative weight. 4. The probable effect of arm circumference in overestimation of blood pressure in heavy subjects was analysed by multivariate correlations. It was concluded that if the influence of arm circumference is excluded, the effect of relative weight on blood pressure is less marked but still present.
