[Right bundle-branch block configuration in the pacemaker ECG--3 different observations].

We report on 3 cases of right bundle branch block configuration in the ECG after pacemaker implantation. In case 1 it was not noticed that the catheter had been directed through an unknown sinus venosus defect into the left atrium and the left ventricle. In case 2 the catheter reached the left ventricle via an iatrogenic perforation of the lower part of the atrial septum. In case 3 the catheter was situated correctly in the right ventricle, but the tip was penetrating the septum. Different possibilities of interpretation of this phenomenon are discussed, and a description of further pacemaker catheter misplacements which may be responsible for a right bundle branch block configuration is given. The authors take the view that a pacemaker catheter should not remain in the arterial area, in the pericardial space and in the coronary sinus. A lateral radiograph, a 12-lead ECG and an echocardiographic study are helpful for detecting and interpreting an unusual catheter position or a right bundle branch block configuration in the pacemaker ECG.

[Use of "fermosin" fodder yeast in a multi-generation experiment with chickens. 1. The rearing period].

The use of 5%, 7.5% and 15% 'fermosinR' torula yeast as a reference protein for soybean oilmeal and fishmeal was tested under toxicologic aspects in a multi-generation experiment over 3 generations with small chickens and young hens of the species White Leghorn at the ages of between 5 and 147 days. Only with a quota of 15% 'fermosinR' was the feed and energy consumption of the young animals diminished. Crude protein and amino acid consumption increased with the growing concentration in the mixed feed. For the parameters live weight development and mortality of the young hens no significant relation to the arrangement of the experiment could be proved. The results show that the feeding of 'fermosinR' torula yeast to small chickens and young hens is basically possible. The clinical status ascertained, the results of biochemical investigations and the findings of pathomorphology from the reared animals respectively those died during the experiment are to be reported on.

[The use of "fermosin" fodder yeast in a multigeneration experiment with hens. 2. The laying period].

In a multi-generation experiment with 120 hens of the species White Leghorn per group kept in cages, the influence of 5%, 7.5% and 15% 'fermosinR' torula yeast in the ration of mixed feed on various performance parameters in the 364-day laying period was investigated under long-term toxicologic aspects. In all probability there is no indication of toxic influences. The compatibility of the biomass can be considered good provided the basic nutrition-physiologic demands are met.

[Choline requirement of the laying hen. 2. Effect of methionine and fat content of rations on choline requirement].

165 laying hens per group received 3.0, 3.5, or 4.0 g methionine, 29 or 59 g fat and supplements of 0, 108, 217, 434 or 868 mg choline per kg feed resp. (3 X 2 X 5) over a period of 336 days. The average laying performance was 70% and was not influenced values by the content of the feed. The methionine supplements significantly increased the weight of the eggs by 0.6 and 1.1 g resp. The higher fat content increased the weight of the eggs by 0.6 g. Feed expenditure was not influenced by the subject of the experiment. The results of the experiment show that laying hens do not require choline as feed supplement and that therefore no interactions between choline and the fat and methionine content of the ration are to be expected.

[Evaluation of laying-hen feed with varied vitamin E and antioxidant supplementation].

In two experiments with 1,250 laying hybrids the influence of the elimination of vitamin E and antioxidant supplements to the laying hen feed was tested. With mixed feed according to official quality requirements but without vitamin E and antioxidant supplements laying hens achieved the same laying performance and individual weight as the control group. There was no influence on feed consumption, feed expenditure per 100 g egg, mortality, development of body weight, the tensile strength of the eggs and the fat quality of the body either. Vitamin E content in the yolk increases with the growing vitamin E content in the feed. The vitamin E requirement norm of laying hens for consumer egg production is achieved at a native vitamin E content of 7 mg/kg laying hen feed. The supplement of synthetic antioxidant is unnecessary.

[Use of "fermosine"--fodder yeast in a multi-generation trial with chickens. 3. Evaluation of health safety in a long-term toxicologic test].

In a 3-generation experiment with a total of 2520 hens and 210 cocks of the species 'White Leghorn' kept in cages, the compatibility of 5.0%, 7.5% and 15% 'fermosin' torula yeast in the mixed feed ration was tested under long-term toxicologic aspects. The parameters investigated and relevant for the toxicological statement, with high probability, did not show a negative influence of the test ration. Thus, a good compatibility of the tested yeast product 'fermosin' for laying hens can be stated.

[Familial occurrence of cardiac myxomas].

A report is given on the occurrence of left atrial myxoma in both mother and daughter. A successful operation for a local recurrence was performed on the mother 4 years later. Sudden death of unknown cause occurred at young age in other siblings and was accompanied in one by arterial embolism, suggesting an even higher incidence. The potential accumulation of cardiac myxomas in a family was confirmed by a literature survey of 8 "myxoma families". Observation of these cases calls for the following Careful surgical excision because of the danger of a local recurrence. Echocardiographic follow-up for at least 5 years. Investigation of relatives.

[Effect of the polyether antibiotic "monensin" on fattening and slaughtering performance as well as protein and energy retention in bulls].

In an individual feeding experiment (150-500 kg live weight) the influence of the polyether antibiotic Monensin on the fattening, slaughtering and retention performances of crossbreeding dairy bulls (genotype 31) and fattening hybrids (genotype 61) was ascertained. The supplementation of the polyether antibiotic on average resulted in a decrease by approximately equal to 11% of the dry matter and energy expenditure per kg weight gain due to a lower feed intake and a higher live weight gain. The slaughtering parameter investigated and the chemical composition of the empty body remained uninfluenced. The daily nutrient retention values were positively influenced by the Monensin supplementation since the fattening bulls of the test group required 30 days less to achieve the attempted fattening weight. The additional retention of protein, fat and energy per animal and day in the dairy bulls approximately equal to 10.9; 13.5 and 16.4% and in the fattening hybrids 1.9; 3.2 and 2.6%. Due to a higher energy retention at a lower level of feed and energy intake after Monensin supplementation an average of approximately equal to 11.3 and 15.4% resp. more of the consumed digestible protein and the digestible energy resp. were retained in the empty bodies. One can conclude that Monensin improved the utilisation of feed energy; obviously the effect of the polyether antibiotic is due to its influence on processes in the rumen or directly or indirectly on metabolism.

[Effect of the polyether antibiotic monensin on rumen fermentation in fattening bulls during the feeding of rations rich in sugar beets].

In an experiment with six fattening bulls the influence of the polyether antibiotic "Monensin" (200 mg/animal and day) on the rumen physiologic parameters before and one, two, three and six hours resp. after the feeding of rations rich in dried sugar beet was investigated. The parameters of rumen fermentation are significantly influenced by the time of rumen fluid sampling and by the quota of dried sugar beet in the concentrated feed (40 and 80% resp.). The effect of "Monensin" supplementation was a narrowing of the acetate: propionate proportion in the rumen fluid over the complete period of the experiment. The molar butyrate quota was distinctly diminished in comparison with earlier feeding experiments with fattening bulls. This effect is caused by the relatively higher values of the butyric acid content in the rumen fluid, which is due to the high quota of dried sugar beet in the concentrated feed.

[Kidney tumor embolization. Progress, experiences and complications].

Indications for preoperative and palliative embolization of renal tumors have been restricted due to the failures caused by insufficient tumor blockage. Personal experiences using a variety of materials (balloon n = 18, gelfoam n = 10, ethibloc1 /glucose n = 23) and their effectiveness are presented. special emphasis is placed on the influence of parasitic collaterals and the complication rate on the various procedures. Clinical results corroborate those obtained from our own animal experiments: only a capillary embolization that is based on the tumor volume exhausts the current possibilities of therapeutic vascular occlusion of tumors.
