"Hominoid clavicle" from Sahabi is actually a fragment of cetacean rib.

A late Miocene/early Pliocene mammalian fossil from the site of Sahabi, Libya, was identified in previous publications as a clavicle belonging to the superfamily Hominoidea. After studying both a cast of the specimen and previously published descriptions and photographs we have concluded that the fossil is not a clavicle, but a rib fragment. In addition, our study demonstrates beyond reasonable doubt that this rib belongs not to a primate, but to a marine mammal. Following comparisons with 19 species in 14 genera of marine mammals, as well as six hominoid and three cercopithecoid species, both modern and fossil, we conclude that the specimen is best attributed to the Odontoceti, the cetacean suborder containing dolphins and porpoises. The rib indicates an animal in the size range of Recent Tursiops or Lagenorhynchus.

The normal developmental regulation of a cloned sgs3 'glue' gene chromosomally integrated in Drosophila melanogaster by P element transformation.

A 7-kb genomic segment containing the coding sequence for the Drosophila melanogaster Formosa variant of salivary gland secretion protein 3 (sgs3) has been inserted into the snw y, bw, st strain of D. melanogaster using the P transformation vector p.6.1. The inserted sequence codes for a shorter RNA which can be distinguished from that of the host gene. The amount of RNA, and its stage- and tissue-specific synthesis is identical to that of the host gene, which suggests that all the cis-acting regulatory DNA sequences for this gene are contained within this 7-kb segment.

Computer-aided assessment of receptor status in human breast cancer.

Computer-aided analysis of simulated cytosolic estradiol-17 beta receptor binding data using Scatchard and nonlinear Mass Action models showed the latter to be superior. Simulation studies of binding data, incorporating the magnitude and uncertainties associated with inefficiencies of separating free from bound hormone, nonspecific and specific binding, allowed the prediction of uncertainties associated with estimates of receptor content. Realistic values for the minimum detectable receptor concentration that can be distinguished from zero with a given probability were also obtained and may be used as a cutoff value for selection of patients for hormone therapy. This improved reliability in quantification should more clearly define the prognostic value of these receptor assays with respect to adjuvant therapy for primary cancer following surgery or anti-estrogen treatment for recurrent disease, thereby improving the management of breast cancer. Computer simulations and regression analyses were performed on a PDP11/34 using programs written in FORTRAN IV.

Will the new tax law hurt giving to hospitals?

Despite predictions that the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981, by diminishing the tax benefits of charitable giving, will have a serious adverse effect on philanthropy to hospitals, many hospital development officers remain optimistic. They recommend that hospitals respond by improving their marketing efforts to their giving publics.
