The adsorption of bilirubin from aqueous solution onto solid cholestyramine and polyvinylpyrrolidone.

Shifts in the visible spectrum of aqueous bilirubin (BR) resulting from the addition of soluble polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) suggest specific interactions. Hence, isotherms were determined for the adsorption of BR from aqueous solution onto solid, cross-linked PVP and onto cholestyramine (CA) (used as a reference adsorbent) at 0, 10, 20 and 25 degrees C. Although adsorption onto PVP reaches equilibrium values more rapidly than for CA, the latter adsorbent has a larger capacity. Furthermore the isotherms for PVP are independent of temperature while those for CA show an increase in BR adsorbed with an increase in temperature.

Synthesis of Benzo-15-crown-5 polyethers, anticoccidial ionophore analogues.

Synthesis of eight benzo-15-crown-5 derivatives I (R = H, CO2Me, CO2H, Me; R1 = H, CO2H, CO2Me, CHO, CH=CHCO2H, CH2CH2CO2H) designed as rigid cyclic analogues of the anticoccidial ionophores is described. No anticoccidial activity was observed in chickens, but moderate activity in tissue culture was found for I (R = Me, R1 = H; R = R1 = H) and dibenzo-18-crown-6.

Traumatic arteriovenous fistula of the internal mammary artery.

A rare case of arteriovenous fistula of the left internal mammary artery after blunt chest trauma is described. The patient was seen 3 weeks later because of a pulsating mass which varied in size, over the left midsternal area. Aortography and arteriography showed an aneurysmal sac draining into a vein in the left chest wall and then into the left axillary and neck veins. The fistula was ligated and excised followed by complete recovery. The literature is reviewed and differential diagnosis from congenital heart conditions, A-V shunts of other thoracic wall vessels, and vascular tumors is discussed.

Football acne--an acneiform eruption.

Football acne is a peculiar form of localized acneiform eruption of the chin that occurs in acne-prone individuals, as a result of the use of a protective chin strap under conditions of physical and emotional stress. Perhaps it is a locus minoris resistentiae phenomenon. The condition responds favorably to the removal of the chin strap and to the usual topical and systemic acne therapies.

Dermabrasion for showers of seborrheic keratoses.

Seborrheic keratoses, skin tumors of undetermined etiology, are easily traumatized with consequent local irritation and inflammation, and are cosmetically undesirable. They can occasionally undergo malignant degeneration. A rapid increase in size and number of these lesions is thought by many to be a sign of internal malignancy. Dermabrasion using a diamond fraise is a simple and fast method for removing multiple seborrheic keratoses with minimal trauma, rapid healing, and good cosmetic results.

Herpes zoster: correlation of age, sex, distribution, neuralgia, and associated disorders.

The influence of sex and age on the distribution of lesions, incidence of postherpetic neuralgia, and related disorders in herpes zoster is reported. Results were obtained by reviewing the records of 140 outpatients with herpes zoster seen over a ten-year period. Trigeminal involvement and post-herpetic neuralgia were more common in patients over 50 years of age. The most common sites of lesions in all ages were the thoracic dermatomes, between T-1 and T-8. The distribution of lesions and the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia did not vary between the sexes. High incidences of diabetes and cataracts were found to be associated with herpes zoster infection. Clinical carcinoma of the prostate was a frequent finding in men with herpes zoster over age 50. In those patients with malignancies, there was no correlation between distribution of zoster lesions and location of malignancy.
