Epidemiology of Yersiniae in Barcelona, Spain.

Between April 1980 to December 1984 we undertook a study on the epidemiology of pathogenic Yersinia. Stool specimens from 5.199 patients with acute gastroenteritis were studied and Y. enterocolitica biotype 4 serotype 3 was isolated in 42 cases (0.8%). The serological response was studied in 21 of these patients. Faecal specimens from 784 non-laboratory animals were also studied. The only pathogenic isolates from these animals were seven strains of Y. enterocolitica biotype 4 serotype 3 from six pigs and one dog and one strain of Y. pseudotuberculosis from a pig. The search of pathogenic Yersinia in 424 samples form row foods allowed the isolation of eight strains of Y. enterocolitica serotype 3 and one strain of Y. pseudotuberculosis from pig's tongue.

Human isolates of Enterobacter intermedium.

The phenotypic characters of four clinical strains of Enterobacter intermedium (a species usually isolated from surface water and soil) are described and compared to those of E. cloacae and E. asburiae.

Gastroenteritis etiology in a university hospital during 1983.

This paper reports the results of a microbiological study of the patients seen with diarrhea at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Barcelona) through 1983. Two thousand seven hundred sixty three specimens were studied in search of an enteropathogenic bacteria, 1341 were submitted to parasitologic study and 684 to rotavirus search. Two hundred fifty one Salmonella spp., 233 C. jejuni, 152 Shigella spp., 47 Yersinia spp., 96 G. intestinalis and 181 positive Rotavirus specimens were detected. Data about efficacy of the methods employed, seasonal and age incidence and sensitivity to the antimicrobials of the bacterial isolated strains are reported.

In vitro activity of clofazimine against rapidly growing nonchromogenic mycobacteria.

The in vitro activity of clofazimine against 80 isolates of rapidly growing nonchromogenic mycobacteria was studied by an agar dilution method. The drug inhibited 96% of strains tested at concentrations less than or equal to 1 microgram/ml, and it appears to be an agent of potential efficacy against Mycobacterium fortuitum and M. chelonae.

Incidence of enteroinvasive Escherichia coli in Spain. A 14-month prospective study.

Between February 1984 and May 1985, a prospective study was performed in patients with acute enteritis to determine the incidence of enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (ECEI) in our environment. Eight hundred and forty-three strains of E. coli were studied by agglutination with antisera for serogroups O28ac, 029, 0112, 0124, 0136, 0144, 0152 and 0164. Eleven strains were found to pertain to one or another of these serogroups: 6 to 029, 2 to 0124, 2 to 0164 and 1 to 0143. Of these, only the two corresponding to 0124 invaded HeLa cells and had a positive Sereny test. These strain were lysine decarboxylase and lactose negative and did not produce gas. In 125 strains that did not belong to any of the enteroinvasise serogroups indicated, but had been isolated from patients with febrile enteritis in which no other enteropathogen could be isolated (32 strains), or had metabolic characteristics of enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (93) strains, the Sereny test and invasion of HeLa cells were studied. In every case, both tests were negative.

[Contribution to the knowledge of intestinal protozoa infestation in the hospital population of Barcelona (author's transl)].

This report concerns the analysis of 650 fecal samples submitted for parasitic investigation to the Microbiology Service of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau of Barcelona. The samples were analyzed by the technique of fixation and direct observation of Sapero and Lawless (MIFD), and with the biphasic concentration method of Blagg et al (MIFC). Intestinal protozoa were detected in 183 samples (28.2%), with a total of 232 protozoosis uncovered. The specific analysis gave the following results: Giardia lamblia, 10.9%; Dientamoeba fragilis, 7.8%; Entamoeba coli, 4.6%; Endolimax nana, 4.5%; Entamoeba hartmanni, 4.0%; Iodamoeba buetschlii, 2.9%; Entamoeba histolytica, 0.7%; Chilomastix mesnili, 0.2%; Trichomonas hominis, 0.2%. The results obtained by the two methods have been compared, observing the highest number of positive results with MIFD technique. Especial mention is made of the higher incidence of Dientamoeba fragilis in samples positive for Oxyuris further studies being needed to establish the basis for the relationship between both species of parasites.

Cutaneous alternariosis treated with miconazole.

A 40-year-old man had had a chronic, slowly spreading inflammatory process in the skin over the right knee of ten years' duration. Culture of a biopsy specimen grew Alternaria sp. Antimycotic susceptibility testing with flucytosine, amphotericin B, and miconazole nitrate was performed. The Alternaria was highly sensitive to the last two drugs. Miconazole nitrate, 1.2 g daily intravenously for 31 days, did not induce a clinical response. The lesions were then infiltrated with 10 mg of miconazole nitrate in 10 mL of polyethoxylated castor oil (Cremophor EL) twice weekly, with clearing of the lesions during a several-month period.
