Interim results on a randomized trial of mitomycin C in combination with orchidectomy for newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer.

The interim results of a randomized trial comparing orchidectomy alone versus orchidectomy and mitomycin C in 178 newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer patients are presented. Of 148 evaluable patients 75 were treated with orchidectomy alone and 73 received adjuvant intravenous mitomycin C. Mean time to progression was 15 months in the orchidectomy group versus 14 months in the mitomycin C group. Interim analysis did not demonstrate a favorable effect of the combination with this chemotherapeutic agent compared to orchidectomy alone (P = .45).

Mitomycin C in combination with orchiectomy for newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer: preliminary results on a randomized trial.

The preliminary results of a randomized trial comparing orchiectomy versus orchiectomy and mitomycin C in 119 newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer patients are presented. Of 109 evaluable patients 57 were treated with orchiectomy alone and 52 received adjuvant intravenous mitomycin C. Mean interval to progression was 13 months in the orchiectomy group versus 11 months in the mitomycin C group. Preliminary analysis did not demonstrate a favorable effect of the combination with this chemotherapeutic agent compared to orchiectomy alone (p = 0.3).

[Occurrence of beta2-microglobulin in normal and carcinomatous renal tissue (author's transl)].

Fifty renal tissues and renal tumours are examined and the occurrence of beta2-microglobulin (beta2m) are measured. It is found especially in the solubilized fraction of the tissue. The renal tumours contain four time more beta-2m but they are to be divised into two populations in accordance to their microscopic and macroscopic aspects. This explains why only a part of the patients with renal tumours has an elevated blood beta2m.

Beta-Globulins

[Occurrence of fetorenal antigens in renal adenocarcinoma].

An antigen sharing common antigenic determinants with Australia-Antigen was found in the renal excretory ducts of human fetuses. Moreover, in the sera from patients suffering from kidney tumours, antibodies against Australia-Antigens should be found. This has not been proven by us, nor has the presence of this kind of fetorenal antigen in the tissues of 25 renal carcinomas been found using a very sensitive radioimmunoassay. Therefore, the search for an Australia-Antigen-like antibody or antigen cannot be used as a tumour test nor has the theory of the carcinogenesis yet been questioned.

Composition of bladder stones in Rwanda.

A small area of endemic bladder stone formation occurs in Rwanda, Central Africa. The X-ray diffraction of 13 of these stones revealed that they were mainly composed of calcium oxalate monohydrate. By X-ray fluorescence the presence of considerable amounts of rubidium was demonstrated which was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentration of rubidium was about 2-5 times greater than that of zinc. Thy hypothesis that rubidium is an important lithogenic element is formulated. It might explain this endemic bladder stone formation which is exceptional for Central Africa.
