Liquid crystal contact thermography of deep venous thrombosis.

A new thermographic technique for the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis, liquid crystal contact color thermography using naturally occurring cholesteric crystals is described. Cholesteric crystals have the property of changing colors in consistent, predictable patterns in response to local temperature changes. The technique is reliable and reproducible. It has also been rendered simple by embedding the liquid crystals in elastic, flexible sheets. The sheets are inflated and readily adapt and contour to extremities of various sizes and shapes. Preliminary results have shown excellent correlation with ascending phlebography. The two methods were in agreement in 90% of cases with no false-negative liquid crystal thermograms. The technique shows promise as a noninvasive screening study for the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis in high risk patients.

CT and angiographic correlates: surgical image of renal mass lesions.

Twenty-three consecutive patients with surgically proved renal mass lesions were examined preoperatively by means of computerized tomography (CT) and renal angiography. Histopathology of the 23 renal masses included the following: hypernephroma (17), transitional cell carcinoma (3), oncocytoma (2), benign cyst (1). Computed tomography was correct in the preoperative diagnosis of 21 of 23 masses (91 per cent); angiographic diagnosis was correct in 18 of 23 consecutive masses (78 per cent). Correlation of the findings on CT and angiography resulted in correct diagnosis in 22 of the 23 lesions (96 per cent). Independently, CT and angiography each contribute essential information for diagnosis and preoperative planning. CT discloses anatomic detail, tissue consistency, organ system relationships, and relatively precise estimates of tumor bulk. Angiography remains a necessary complement providing a surgical image of tumor vascularity and vessel origins.

Computed tomography in ileofemoral venous thrombosis: extension to inferior vena cava defined with foot vein infusion.

Two cases of ileofemoral venous thrombosis and occlusion are presented in which cephalad extension of venous thrombosis to the inferior vena cava (IVC) is demonstrated on computed tomography (CT). Proximal venous obstruction does not diminish the utility of foot vein infusion simultaneous with the CT study. Delineation of intraluminal thrombosis in the IVC is excellent with good definition of occluded and patent segments of the IVC.

Seminoma: improved imaging and tumor characterization with computed tomography.

We report 2 cases of metastatic seminoma to emphasize the use of computed tomography in defining accurately the extent and volume of tumor before treatment. Computed tomography permits more direct visualization of the retroperitoneum, mesenteric and abdominal lymph nodes, and extra nodal extension of the tumor to other organ systems. Additionally, characteristic tissue densities are displayed (that is cyst and hemorrhage), which may serve as an index to the dynamics of tumor growth and change. Lymphography and venacavography are invasive studies and both share inherent limitations in imaging for seminoma. Cross-sectional imaging is more precise in describing treatment fields for radiation therapy. Results of treatment are monitored more confidently with computed tomography.

Positive contrast ventriculography combined with computed tomography: technique and applications.

Injection of contrast material (melgumine iothalamate or metrizamide) into the cerebral ventricles, or into an intracranial cyst directly or through a shunt device, has proven to be of considerable value in the evaluation of hydrocephalus, localized or diffuse, and intracranial cysts. When combined with computed tomography (CT) of the brain (positive contrast CT ventriculography), these procedures become simpler to perform, the incidence of complications is less, and there is a significant increase in their diagnostic yield.

Computed tomographic cavo-urography: lower-extremity contrast infusion simultaneous with computed tomography of the retroperitoneum.

Successful opacification and distention of the inferior vena cava was obtained simultaneously with computed tomography by contrast infusion through a lower-extremity vein. Images obtained by this method displayed retroperitoneal anatomical relationships to better advantage, permitting more accurate interpretation of the upper retroperitoneum, particularly in lymphoma.

Meat bolus impaction of the lower esophagus associated with a paraesophageal hernia. Successful noninvasive treatment with intravenous glucagon.

Ferrucci and Long recently reported the relief of esophageal food impaction with the use of intravenous glucagon in three patients. Our first experience in using this new procedure was very successful and gratifying. The essence and purpose of this brief communication is to record and further substantiate the efficacy of a new treatment modality.
