Amoebiasis as a cause of death in a Scottish resident.

An elderly woman, resident throughout her life in Scotland presented with abdominal pain and diarrhoea. A provisional diagnosis of ulcerative colitis was made on sigmoidoscopy. At post mortem Entamoeba Histolytica was demonstrated in considerable numbers in the mucosal ulcers. It would appear though extremely rare that amoebiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of colonic ulceration.

A histochemical study of simple laryngeal polyps.

Benign laryngeal polyps and normal larynxes have been studied by histochemical and other staining methods. These show that the polyps contain much free hyaluronic acid and 6-chondroitin sulphate. Their mode of production may be the mechanical separation of these compounds from collagen fibres by vibration. An alcian-elastic stain may be a helpful diagnostic method.

Active tuberculosis unrecognised until necropsy.

12 of the 24 cases of active tuberculosis which came to necropsy in Dundee hospitals from 1968 to 1975 were diagnosed after death. The overall distribution of anatomical types was similar to that in previous surveys, but in those diagnosed at necropsy there was an excess of psoas abscess and miliary, colonic, and adrenal lesions. Class-IV patients and a history of steroid therapy were also more common in cases diagnosed at necropsy. None of these differences is statistically significant.
