Effects of combinations of endosulfan, dimethoate and carbaryl on immune and hematological parameters of rats.

IgG and IgM levels and hematological parameters (red and white blood cell counts, thrombocyte, monocyte, lymphocyte and granulocyte counts and hemoglobin concentrations) were determined in albino rats exposed to combinations of endosulfan, dimethoate and carbaryl. Two and 3 combinations of 100- and 1000-fold acceptable daily intake (ADI) of endosulfan (ADI = 0.00612 mg/kg), dimethoate (ADI = 0.0204 mg/kg) and carbaryl (ADI = 0.0101 mg/kg) were administered po to male albino rats for 3.5 mo. Animals were immunized s.c. with tetanus toxoid in Freund's complete adjuvant 20 d before terminating exposures. At 100-fold ADI dosing, administration of each of the pesticides alone did not cause any difference in the parameters, but numbers of white blood cells and monocytes increased in rats given endosulfan + dimethoate while numbers of red blood cells increased with dimethoate + carbaryl. Rats given 1000-fold ADI endosulfan + dimethoate + carbaryl had significant differences in almost every parameter, while IgG, IgM white blood cells and lymphocytes decreased, and monocytes and % granulocytes increased from single endosulfan dosing. Lymphocyte counts were reduced by single dimethoate or carbaryl dosing. Endosulfan + dimethoate + carbaryl produced the most effective changes in comparison to single dosing or other pesticide combinations.

The effects of malathion on some hormone levels and tissues secreting these hormones in rats.

Two dosage levels of malathion (10 and 100 mg/kg) were given po to albino rats daily for 15 w. The effects of malathion on T3, T4, aldosterone, cortisol, testosterone, estradiol 17-beta, and on the tissues secreting these hormones were investigated. Analysis of T3, T4, testosterone and estradiol 17-beta showed no difference in response while 10 mg aldosterone/kg showed a decrease. Serum cortisol also decreased in the same rats. Ovaries and thyroid glands in all groups had no histopathological changes, but slight changes were present in testes and adrenal glands of the dosed rats.

[Effect of disinfection on linear and dimensional stability of impression materials].

Given the potential for transfer of pathogenic microorganisms from dental impressions, a method for surface disinfection of impressions is needed to prevent spread of infection by way of impressions and casts made from them. The effects of disinfectant solutions on the impression materials linear and dimensional stability to prevent viral infections are investigated in this article. For this purpose, irreversible hydrokolloid and silicon rubber base impression materials and five disinfectant solutions were used. No apparent linear and dimensional change could be detected after 30 minute immersion in any of the disinfectants tested.

[Subjective evaluation of major connector designs for mandibular removable partial dentures].

The dentist himself is responsible for the design of the removable partial denture, because he must know and apply the biomechanical principles also. Two mandibular removable partial dentures, one with a lingual bar and the other with a lingual plate as the major connector were constructed for 7 men and 9 women patients who had mandibular Kennedy class I edentulous area. Patients used each type of prothesis for one month. At the end of this period, speeching, chewing and comford of partial dentures were evaluated according to the patients subjective impression. In general, patients adapted best to major connectors that covered soft tissues least was better. As a result, generally patients preferred lingual bar type denture.
