Pregnant or nonpregnant female rats were orally intoxicated by aluminum lactate (400 mg Al/kg/d) from d 0-19 of gestation to determine the treatment's influence on element variations in the females and their fetuses. The aluminum levels of plasma, liver, spleen, and kidneys were significantly higher in treated pregnant rats than non-pregnant female rats. Differences of P, Ca, Cu, Zn, or Mg levels were observed among the four groups of female rats in the tissues and plasma. The aluminum content of the 20-d-old fetuses did not significantly differ between the treated and control groups. On the contrary, calcium and magnesium levels in the whole fetuses from treated or nontreated dams are significantly different.
The main fraction (about 75%) of the mucilage extracted from seeds of Linum usitatissimum which consists of arabino-xylans (AX) has been studied in dilute and semidilute regimes by SEC/MALLS analysis and rheology, respectively. It has been found that AX contains 3 populations of about 5 000 000 g mol(-1) (less than 10%), 1 000 000 g mol(-1) (about 40%), and 200 000 g mol(-1) (about 50%). We have also observed a great retention of polymer during the filtration procedure, which is much pronounced as the AX concentration increases. This evidences the presence of large aggregates in the solution. The retention can be greatly diminished if the filtration is conducted under higher temperature. Aggregation could result from the establishment of intermolecular associations via hydrogen bonds. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by the two higher populations in molar masses which present a random coil conformation consistent with a low degree of branching. Rheological measurements, conducted at 20 g L(-1), have confirmed the association tendency leading to pseudo gels behavior. Viscoelastic properties have been evidenced by time-temperature master curves of dynamic spectra. Such master curves have also been established with addition of chaotropic (i.e., KSCN) and lyotropic (i.e., NaCl) salts. It has been shown that intermolecular associations are greatly diminished under chaotropic salts influence. This has been also confirmed by SEC/MALLS analysis. These results point out the role of hydrogen bonds in the organization of the AX system.
The authors report on the first coming out in Gabon of human monkey-pox. Four children in the same family were simultaneously attacked. In one of the two fatal cases, diagnosis of monkey-pox was confirmed by the isolation of the virus. In the three other cases, diagnosis was based on clinical and epidemiological findings. The coming out of monkey-pox in Gabon squares with sporadic coming out of this zoonosis observed in the humid tropical forests of west and Central Africa. Two fatal cases presented some symptoms of hemorrhagic fever and cutaneous symptoms did not dominate the clinical feature. As a consequence of it, monkey-pox has to be envisaged in similar cases. The attack of liver and spleen in man has not been documented up till now, as it has been for monkeys. Classical diagnosis is based on the isolation of the virus from a cutaneous lesion. In the present case, the virus was isolated from a blood sample. Epidemiological study did not reveal any interhuman transmission evidence, nor the source of infection.
Five hundred serum samples from volunteers blood donors were investigated in order to determine the presence of anti-HCV antibodies by an enzyme-linked immunoassay recently developed worldwide. Prevalence of true-positive samples was 1.2% (6/500), 2 fold higher than the reported prevalence in most of the industrialized countries. From these 6 sera, one (16.6%) showed simultaneous reactivity for HBV anticore antibody. Three sera (25%) from 12 patients with diagnosis of Non-A Non-B hepatitis were reactive for anti-HCV antibodies while in a group of 32 sera with negative HAV and HBV screening, 4 (12.5%) showed anti-HCV antibodies. Two samples out of 16 sera persistently positive for anticore demonstrated the presence of anti-HCV antibodies. The anti-HCV antibodies were undetectable in two cases of autoimmune chronic hepatitis. Our results indicate that in Venezuela, HCV represents a significant problem of public health coexisting in certain cases with HBV infection.

Early substitutive hormonal treatment for congenital hypothyroidism is the main factor affecting the prognosis of mental abnormalities. Therapy should be instituted in the first few weeks of life but clinical diagnosis is usually very difficult at this stage and biological criteria have to be used as a basis for establishing the diagnosis during the neonatal period. For this reason, TSH levels were measured in 1880 babies on the 4th day of life. This enabled a diagnosis of thyroid agenesia to be made in a case where no tangible clinical signs were present, and treatment could be started on the 12th day of life. Furthermore, two cases of hypothyroidism from iodine overdosage during amniography were discovered and early treatment instituted. The results of this study, which was limited to only one maternity unit, demonstrate the value of systematic diagnostic procedures for congenital hypothyroidism. It also underlines the danger of iodine overdosage during foetal life which could contra-indicate the use of amniography.
The meaning behind words is never simple. The authors examine natimortality and emphasize obstacles to accurate quantitative evaluation and difficulties associated with temporal and geographic comparisons and etiologic definitions.
Adherence of 14C-glucose labeled Candida albicans to vaginal epithelial cells was measured in the presence of 10 potential inhibitory sugars at concentrations of 5 to 150 mg per ml for 90 minutes at 37 degrees C. In competitive inhibition experiments, no inhibition of adherence was seen with any sugar at any concentration. On the contrary, with the exception of the aminosugars glucosamine, galactosamine, and mannosamine, increased attachment of Candida to vaginal epithelial cells was found in the presence of dextrose, galactose, mannose, alpha-methyl-mannoside, N-acetyl-glucosamine, N-acetyl-galactosamine, and N-acetyl-mannosamine. Increased adherence was not associated with recognizable changes in the electron microscopic appearance of Candida cell surface or alterations in fungal cell hydrophobicity as measured by interaction chromatography. Measurement of nonreceptor-specific adherence of Candida to glass beads revealed similar increased attachment in the presence of the test sugars, suggesting that adherence of Candida may not require specific yeast adhesin-cell receptor interaction.
