Alcohol effects on the morphometric development of the subfornical organ and area postrema of the albino mouse.

We have studied the development of the nuclear sizes of ependymocytes and neurons of two circumventricular organs of the male alcoholic mouse: the Subfornical Organ (SFO) and the Area Postrema (AP), comparing the results with a control group. The global volume of both centers was also studied. The results show that the SFO, a structure related to the control of fluid balance, responds to alcoholism with an increase of the global volume. This increase could be related to the variations of salt-water balance and/or blood pressure in chronic alcoholism. However, the size of cell nuclei in the SFO is not affected. In contrast, the AP responds to chronic alcoholism like other nervous centres, with a decrease of the nuclear size of its cells. The global volume of AP does not change.

Interactions of merocyanine 540 with human brain tumor cells.

Merocyanine 540 (MC 540), a photosensitizing dye, has been used in preclinical studies and in a phase I clinical trial for the purging of leukemia, lymphoma, and neuroblastoma cells from bone marrow grafts. We evaluated MC 540 as an agent for the inactivation of brain tumor cell lines of medulloblastoma or glioma origin. The U373 glioma and 74SA medulloblastoma demonstrated significantly reduced survival as determined by in vitro clonogenic assay compared to normal glial cells when exposed to MC 540 and light. U87 glioma and Daoy medulloblastoma, however, were less sensitive than normal glial cells to MC 540 photoinactivation. In vivo injection of MC 540 into mice with malignant brain tumors disclosed greater dye incorporation into the malignant tissue compared with normal control mice brains or normal tissue surrounding the brain tumor. Increased uptake of MC 540 was observed in mice injected with either photosensitive (U373 and 74SA) or photoresistant (Daoy) cell lines. These data suggest that MC 540 may be an effective agent against certain brain tumors and that dye uptake in vivo does not reflect photosensitivity.

Magnetic domain imaging with a scanning near-field optical microscope using a modified Sagnac interferometer.

We report on the combination of a scanning near-field optical microscope and a modified Sagnac interferometer for magnetic-domain imaging in the reflection mode. The Sagnac interferometer is used for detection of the magneto-optical Kerr effect. Since the interferometer is inherently insensitive to polarization changes caused by topography effects, magnetic-domain imaging is not limited to samples with flat surfaces. In this way, it is possible to image magnetic bits written on the tracks of a magneto-optical disc that has a rather pronounced surface profile.

[Anti-thymocyte globulin therapy in severe aplastic anemia: an alternative to bone marrow transplantation].

Eight patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) and two patients with congenital hypoplastic anemia (CHA) were treated with absorbed samples of rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) at a total dose of 50-75 mg/kg body weight intravenously over 5 days. Duration of the disease was 1-14 years. Median age of the ten patients was 11 (4-15) years. Four of the eight patients with SAA were responders and transfusion independent for a follow up of 11 to 50 months. In two cases thrombocytopenia of about 100 000/mm3 is present. Four patients were non-responders three of them died in the meantime by the underlining disease. Two patients with CHA did not respond to ATG treatment. The CFU-C level of all eight patients with SAA before treatment was severely decreased. In co-culture studies with normal bone marrow no growth inhibition of normal bone marrow could be demonstrated. Also 20% patients serum did not inhibit normal bone marrow growth. The results are compared with data from literature and discussed in respect to alternative therapies.

Social marketing and diffusion-based strategies for communicating with unique populations: HIV prevention in San Francisco.

We conducted a 2-year investigation of the extent to which strategies based on social marketing and diffusion of innovations concepts are used in preventive health communication with unique (highly ostracized) populations. Of the 49 organizations in San Francisco that operate HIV prevention programs (N = 100), programs that most highly targeted unique populations were surveyed. Personal interviews were then conducted with 38 staff leaders who operated the most and least effective programs. Audiotapes and transcripts were content analyzed to identify the strategies used by program staff. Strategies based on social marketing concepts were more prevalent than strategies based on the diffusion of innovations: More effective programs were characterized by emphasis on homophily, audience segmentation, compatibility-based strategies, and interorganizational collaboration.

A review of the use of nursing diagnosis in U.S. nurse practice acts.

PURPOSE: To determine how many state nurse practice acts include the term or concept of "nursing diagnosis" and describe their similarities and differences. METHODS: Investigators independently divided the practice acts of the 50 states and the District of Columbia into those that did or did not include the term "nursing diagnosis" or the word "diagnosis" within a nursing context. To describe other differences, the investigators operationally defined and independently categorized each act as trendsetting, contemporary, or traditional. FINDINGS: Thirty-three of the 51 practice acts used the term "diagnosis" within nursing context. Of these 33, 13 were identified as trendsetters and 20 as contemporary. Seven trendsetting and 5 contemporary practice acts used the NANDA-based language or "response" when describing the "what" of nursing diagnosis. None of the trendsetting practice acts, but 8 of the contemporary acts, used the NANDA-based "individual, family or community" when describing the "who" of nursing diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: The language of nursing is changing. The majority of practice acts now define the practice of professional nursing as including the diagnostic act, although the manner in which they use the term varies.

The ICln interactome.

The many different functional phenotypes described in mammalian cells can only be explained by an intense interaction of the underlying proteins, substantiated by the fact that the number of independently expressed proteins in living cells seems not to exceed 25 K, a number way too small to explain the >250 K different phenotypes on a one-protein-one-function base. Therefore, the study of the interactome of the different proteins is of utmost importance. Here, we describe the present knowledge of the ICln interactome. ICln is a protein, we cloned and whose function was reported to be as divers as (i) ion permeation, (ii) cytoskeletal organization, and (iii) RNA processing. The role of ICln in these different functional modules can be described best as being a 'connector hub' with 'date hub' function.

Oregon's Medicaid ranking and cost-effectiveness: is there any relationship?

The authors examine whether Oregon's 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993 prioritized lists were ranked in a manner consistent with cost-effectiveness. Two sets of cost-effectiveness data are used: data from economic analyses and Oregon's own cost-effectiveness data. Comparing the ranks of Oregon's lists with the ranks of cost-effectiveness estimates from the literature reveals Spearman correlations of -0.08 for the 1990 list, +0.39 for the 1991 list, +0.25 for the 1992 list, and +0.24 for the 1993 list. Comparing Oregon's lists with Oregon's own cost-effectiveness data reveals rank correlations of +0.99 for the 1990 list, +0.06 for the 1991 list, -0.05 for the 1992 list, and -0.03 for the 1993 list. Thus, there appear to be essentially no relationship between the 1990 list and cost-effectiveness estimates from the economic literature and modest positive relationships between the 1991-93 lists and the literature. In addition, there is virtually no relationship between the 1991-93 lists and Oregon's own cost-effectiveness data. Further, the correlations are very different from +1.0, suggesting that other factors are at play. For example, the 1993 list that is currently being implemented was ranked primarily by improvement in five-year survival and human judgment, not cost-effectiveness.

3-D components of a biological neural network visualized in computer generated imagery. I. Macular receptive field organization.

Computer-assisted, 3-dimensional reconstructions of macular receptive fields and of their linkages into a neural network have revealed new information about macular functional organization. Both type I and type II hair cells are included in the receptive fields. The fields are rounded, oblong, or elongated, but gradations between categories are common. Cell polarizations are divergent. Morphologically, each calyx of oblong and elongated fields appears to be an information processing site. Intrinsic modulation of information processing is extensive and varies with the kind of field. Each reconstructed field differs in detail from every other, suggesting that an element of randomness is introduced developmentally and contributes to endorgan adaptability.

3-D components of a biological neural network visualized in computer generated imagery. II. Macular neural network organization.

Computer-assisted reconstructions of small parts of the macular neural network show how the nerve terminals and receptive fields are organized in 3-dimensional space. This biological neural network is anatomically organized for parallel distributed processing of information. Processing appears to be more complex than in computer-based neural networks, because spatiotemporal factors figure into synaptic weighting. Serial reconstruction data show anatomical arrangements which suggest that 1) assemblies of cells analyse and distribute information with inbuilt redundancy, to improve reliability; 2) feedforward/feedback loops provide the capacity for presynaptic modulation of output during processing; 3) constrained randomness in connectivities contributes to adaptability; and 4) local variations in network complexity permit differing analyses of incoming signals to take place simultaneously. The last inference suggests that there may be segregation of information flow to central stations subserving particular functions.

Bronchoplastic and angioplastic operation in bronchial carcinoma: long-term results of a retrospective analysis from 1973 to 1983.

From 1973 to 1983, 248 bronchoplastic and angioplastic operations were carried out in patients with bronchial cancer. The five-year survival rate of all radically operated patients (stages I and II, n = 108) was 35%. The three-year survival rate in bronchial sleeve resection in stages I and II (n = 46) was 46%. The thirty-day lethality in stages I and II was 9% in bronchial sleeve resection and 5% in combined bronchial and vascular sleeve resections. Indications, surgical technique and complications are discussed.

Craniopharyngioma and "reactive" subependymoma of the third ventricle--a case report.

A 42-year-old woman with an 18-year history of suprasellar tumor, treated by repeated radiation therapy and surgery, was found to have both a craniopharyngioma and subependymoma of the third ventricle. The case is unique in that well documented subependymomas have not been reported in this location. Furthermore, only a few cases of subependymoma have been reported to be accompanied by a primary tumor of the central nervous system other than an ependymoma. Potential causative factors for this seemingly reactive subependymoma are briefly discussed.
