Data from a program aiming to the detection of inborn errors of the erythrocyte metabolism (IEEM) in Northwestern Mexican populations are presented. 5,998 individuals were studied and divided in 5 groups: a) 1,022 full-term newborns without jaundice; b) 872 randomly selected full-term newborns; c) 3,243 full-term newborns with jaundice; d) 54 patients with hemolytic anemia, and e) 807 professional blood donors. In groups b, c and d screening for 9 out of 14 IEEM clearly associated with hemolysis was carried out by means of enzymatic fluorescent procedures. In groups a and e only G-6-PD deficiency was investigated. The results suggest that 0.34%, 0.77%, 24% and 0.37% of the individuals from groups b, c, d and e, respectively, have an IEEM. The frequency of G-6-PD deficiency was 0, 0.43%, 1.1%, 30.3% and 0.37% in the males from groups a, b, c, d and e, respectively. The IEEM as a cause of neonatal jaundice seem not to be a public health problem in the studied populations. Systematic screening for: 1) G-6-PD deficiency in newborns with jaundice and 2) IEEM in patients with hemolysis, is recommended.
An electrophoretically I-like hemoglobin variant was detected during a survey for abnormal hemoglobins in Dagestan (USSR). Neither clinical nor hematological abnormalities were seen in the carrier for this mutant hemoglobin. Structural studies demonstrated a previously undescribed substitution of alpha 60 (E9) Lys leads to Glu.
The amino acid sequence of neurotoxin III, purified from the venom of the North African scorpion Androctonus australis Hector, has been determined by Edman degradation using a liquid-phase sequencer. Carboxypeptidase A hydrolyses confirmed not only the sequence of the five last residues but also the presence of a free alpha-carboxylic group at the C-terminus. Edman degradation was conducted on one hand with the Quadrol [N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxypropyl)ethylene diamine] program and S-alkylated protein before or after coupling with sulfophenylisothiocynate (the first 34 residues were thus identified), on the other hand on tryptic and chymotryptic peptides with a dimethylbenzylamine program (residues 1--23 and 31--34 were confirmed, the positions of residues 35-64 were established). Neurotoxin III was found to belong to the same group of scorpion toxins active on mammals as neurotoxin I purified from the same venom (50 homologous positions exist in the two proteins).

An electrophoretic fast-moving hemoglobin was found in a Cuban family of Spanish descent. Structural studies demonstrated a replacement of arginine by glycine at alpha 141(HC3). This change is not associated with clinical symptoms, although the substitution is in one of the residues involved in the stabilization of the deoxy form of the hemoglobin molecule.

The frequency of alpha-thalassaemia has been determined by the analysis of Hb Barts in 650 newborns; 4.46% of them showed high levels of Hb Barts. The incidence of newborns with different levels of Hb Barts (1-2, 5 and 25%, respectively) and the frequency of the alpha-thalassaemia genes are also given.
A basic protein has been purified from sheep brain. The purified protein sedimented in the analytical centrifuge at 56,000 r.p.m. as an homogenous product. This protein induced an allergic encephalitis when injected into guinea pigs. Some physiochemical properties of the protein were studied: the sedimentation coefficient was 1.52 and the molecular weight was 20,000 +/- 2,000, as estimated by electrophoresis in acrylamide gels containing SDS and urea; the specific extinction coefficient (see article) was 6.01 +/- 0.20. The aminoacid composition of the molecule was determined and its most prominent aspects are a high content of arginine and lysine, the presence of a single tryptophan, the total absence of cysteine and cystine and a blocked N-terminal residue. All these properties are very close to those of human and bovine encephalitogenic proteins.
