Electrical response of bat retina to spectral stimulation: comparison of four microhiropteran species.

Electrical responses of the retinas of 4 species of microchiropteran bats stimulated by spectrally restricted light flashes were found to diverge systematically from the rhodopsin absorption spectrum. The divergence was progressively greater across the 4 species. The results appeared explainable by assuming a second photoreceptor class and photopigment which was present in progressively greater numbers in the retinas of Eptesicus fuscus, Desmodus rotundus, Artibeus jamaicensis and Carollia perspicillata.

Effect of light adaptation on electrical responses of the retinas of four species of bats.

The levels of light adaptation at which the retinas of 4 species of microchiropteran bats became unable to generate electroretinograms were progressively ordered. The order correlated well with light preferences based on activity patterns of the 4 species. These results suggest that the ability of the retina to function in ambient light may govern some natural behaviors of these bats.

Graded differential photoreceptor orientation: ramifications for ultramicrotomy of retina.

When sectioning small blocks of tissue from the retina of the eye, it is sometimes difficult to obtain sections which simultaneously cut squarely across the inner retinal layers and are on the long axis of the photoreceptors. This difficulty is, at least partially, due to the fact that the receptors tilt progressively relative to the tangent to the retinal curve at progressively more peripheral loci. Consideration of the graded differential orientation of the receptors indicates that, in order for the section to be simultaneously coaxial with the receptors and the inner retinal layers, the plane of the section must be parallel to and include the anterior-posterior axis of the eye, as is the case when the whole eye is sectioned through its center. It is illustrated that this criterion can be met for small blocks of retina if the block is excised along a parallel of the eye and the plane of section is perpendicular to the tangent to the retinal curve and the parallel. An approach which accomplishes this is described. Theoretical analysis suggests that distortion of apparent size of structures in the retina can become significant within a few degrees of the posterior pole if this condition is not met.

Night myopia.

Although the phenomenon of night myopia has been recognized for two centuries, its causes are still not fully understood. Early studies implicated spherical aberration and accommodation, but the degree to which either contributed was not clearly established. More recently, "laser speckle" techniques to measure myopia have allowed the collection of data on large subject populations and it appears that night myopia represents a tendency for accommodation to approximate the dark focus as low luminance levels degrade the clarity of the retinal image. In this article, the authors review the past and present literature on night myopia and related anomalous myopias, and describe techniques for their evaluation and correction.
