Growth hormone and prolactin release in acromegalic patients following metergoline administration.

In six acromegalite patients oral administration of 4 mg of metergoline, an antiserotonin agent, produced a fall in plasma growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) concentrations. In the same patients this inhibitory effect was observed after administration of dopaminergic drugs, L-Dopa and 2-Br-alpha-ergocryptine. Both GH and PRL levels remained suppressed during a 6 day course of treatmnt with metergoline. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the inhibitory effect of netergoline on GH and PRL release is determined by inactivation of serotonin receptors in the hypothalamus or at the pituitary.

Synovial cyst in a posterior lumbar joint associated with sacralization at L5. Description of a case.

Synovial cysts may occasionally be localized in the facet joints of the lumbar spine. These lesions are usually secondary to interapophyseal arthritis or trauma, that may cause hypermobility of the facet joints. Given the frequent association with arthrosis, synovial cysts are more often observed at L4-L5, which represents the level of greater mobility in the lumbar spine, in subjects aged over 50 years. A rare case of synovial cyst of the posterior joint of L5-S1 associated with sacralization of L5, a congenital anomaly that determines considerable segmental mechanical stability, is described.

[First results of varietal comparison and nitrogen fertilization of rapeseed in Italy (author's transl)].

Some experiments of varietal comparison of various cultivars of rapeseed were carried out, determining the productivity, the oil yield and the analytical characteristics of the oils. Moreover the effects of nitrogen fertilization on the seed production and on oil characteristics were tested. The achieved results have pointed out that, referring to the chosen environment, the cv. "Matador" and "Leonessa" show the highest seed and oil productions, whereas oils extracted from the cv. "Sinus", "Erusine" and "Sinera" contain the minor quantities of erucic acid. It seem that nitrogen fertilization exerts no appreciable influence on rapeseed oil composition. The possibility of the utilization of cv. with law content in erucic acid confirms the practical validity of the cultivation of rapeseed as on oil plant.

Neuroendocrine effects of interferon alpha 2-a in healthy human subjects.

The acute effects of interferon alpha-2a (3 x 10 IU im) on catecholamine and immunoreactive beta endorphin plasma levels, cortisol serum levels and lymphocyte beta 2-adrenoceptor density were evaluated in ten healthy volunteers. Interferon induced a significant increase in plasma norepinephrine; there was an increased norepinephrine standing response, too. On the contrary, epinephrine standing response was reduced by interferon. Lymphocyte beta 2-adrenoceptors decreased significantly after interferon administration; dissociation constant of binding was unchanged. Cortisol serum levels increased significantly with respect to control test, whereas immunoreactive beta endorphin did not change. These results support the hypothesis of functional relationships between neuroendocrine and immune systems; moreover they may be useful in clinical trials given the administration of interferon alpha in an increasing number of diseases.
